Reprint: Why "speedygeese"?

Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, May 31, 2019 with
Running is great for the development of health, fitness, and quality of life, but how do we get the message across to our friends and acquaintances who would benefit from joining in with us? How we promote ourselves and how we can encourage others to join us in our quest for fitness is something that has been on my mind for many years. I wrote the following story for the August 2004 Vetrunner; after adapting it from an e-book, "Provocations", by Danish author Søren Kierkegaard.

Every time wild geese go on their amazing migratory journey, they fly along, not too far above ground, and call out to any geese on the ground to join them in their flight.

When the flight of the wild geese is heard in the air and there are tame geese down on the ground, the tame geese are instantly aware of it and to a certain degree understand what it means. Some of them even start to run along, beating their wings, crying out in awkward, confused disorder – but they are just mimicking the flying birds, and they never lift off.

There was once a wild goose. In the autumn, about the time for migration, who became aware of some tame geese. The wild goose thought it a shame to fly away from them, and hoped to win them over so that they would decide to go along with him on the flight. He tried to entice them to rise a little higher and then again a little higher, that they might, if possible, accompany him in the flight, saved from the wretched, mediocre life of waddling around on the earth as respectable, tame geese.

At first, the tame geese thought it very entertaining and liked the wild goose. But soon they became tired of him, and drove him away with sharp words, censuring him as a visionary fool devoid of experience and wisdom.

In a certain sense there was something admirable about what the wild goose wanted. Nevertheless, it was a mistake, for a tame goose never becomes a wild goose, but a wild goose can certainly become a tame goose. If what the wild goose tried to do is to be commended in any way, it must above all watch out for one thing – that he himself become like the tame geese. As soon as he notices that the tame geese have any kind of power over him, then away, away in migratory flight.

This could be a metaphor for our sport, albeit not an exact one. True, an athlete who is fit and healthy and full of life is as different from the ordinary person as the wild goose is from the tame goose. However, for us there is always the hope that a tame goose might become a wild goose. When we wild geese call out to the tame geese, some will be able to lift off and join us. But some will argue that we are silly and undignified and too old to be an athlete “at your time of life”. Don’t listen! You know what to tell them. You are a wild goose and you are proud of it. Resist the temptation to sink back into “wretched mediocrity”!

Now you know where the idea of “the speedygeese” training group originated.

Fly goose fly!

Training tonight

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, May 30, 2019 with
Eleven runners including me (not running owing to surgery today) and Peach the dog. Running one kilometre then 20 minutes of surging (fartlek) were Ruth, Allie, Erica, Vanessa, Michael, Jennie, Paul Q, Brownie and Dave. The kilometre was under lights west side Parliament House, the surges were on the small west side oval there. I stayed warm and dry. Actually the dog did all the intervals too.

...but winter is on its way.

Last Sunday might have been the last sunny and pleasant day for a while...

Richard, Lisa, and me, running along easily a few kms into the Half Marathon.

Streak ended: 260 days completed.

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 with
So I will be going into hibernation for winter. With a bit of a cold and some minor surgery happening, it would not be wise to run outdoors in these blizzard conditions. Monday was my final day, number 260. I may revisit a streak come spring, or not. Until then a tentative plan is to do longer runs than I have been doing, when the weather is fair. And give it a miss when the weather is foul. I may look at a 5k training plan too. We will see. But first, recover from some surgery.

I feel a bit like this guy, having to stop. And his cat.

My running streak day 260

Posted by speedygeoff on Monday, May 27, 2019 with
Today I ran 5k well rugged up, no issues with recovery from the half marathon. Speedygeese training, wind off the snow and about 5 degrees, was attended by Jennie, George, Paul Q, Ruth, Mick, Giles, Bill and Bron. They ran 9 or 10 x 200m intervals before we retired to celebrate two birthdays.

My running streak day 259

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, May 26, 2019 with
The long anticipated YMCA Half Marathon was held today. I eased into it, gradually increasing effort through the race, and ended up with ~1:52.13 [Edit: Chip time 1:51.59] which was good enough for an M70 win. I am certain that I have not won my age group in the Canberra Half Marathon before and this was number 29 I have completed (of 50 that have been held). I only felt a bit tired in the last 2k, surprising in that I have done no real distance training. The slow start would have helped. No timed warm-up; 21k-ish for the day.

Nearing the end.

So I jogged a token 3k today. Active rest.
I feel that I am ready for Sunday.

My running streak day 253

Posted by speedygeoff on Monday, May 20, 2019 with
This evening at speedygeese I jogged 5k. The geese ran a session of 10 x 1 minute fast on 3. Participating were Rae and Colin (neither in the photo below) and Tori, Mick, Kahlia, Rachel, Max, James, Indigo, Deborah D, Dave, Bron, Vanessa, Bernardo, and Ruth, all sharing bubbly for Dave's birthday, belatedly. Next week, on Monday the bubbly day, two birthdays are planned to be celebrated.

I let myself sleep in this morning, too cold for parkrun, and ran a warm YCRC event at Stromlo in the afternoon instead. Planning to run a 6k, I didn't feel like going any further than 4k. As luck would have it, that was an option, and I came in equal third with Ewen and Brian. What a coincidence!

Here's an awesome photo of Lisa running this morning's parkrun at Gungahlin.

A jog in the sun - just 5k. There's an awful lot of traffic on Drake Brockman this time of day, mid Friday afternoon, and the huge new development at Ginninderry isn't even occupied yet. Drake Brockman is narrow and the roundabout at the end is a bottleneck at the best of times. I hope our ACT Town Planners know what they are doing.

My running streak day 249

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, May 16, 2019 with
I ran 10k today.. 5k before training with the speedygeese, 5k during. The session tonight was 3 x 800m with a 400m jog, then 200ms until the 30 minutes was up. We ran at the upper flagpoles for a change, at Parliament House. I enjoyed jogging around a bit with Erica(5); Erica's lovely mum Vanessa did the training running with the encourager Michael, and others taking part were Lisa hoping to be running well by Sunday week's Half Marathon, Ruth still croaky from a throaty thing, Deborah D, and Dave doing the whole session.

Today I ran 8.3k - not the plan, but when I set off around the back of the golf course, I discovered that the bicentennial trail had been diverted way round the back of the Ginninderry development, northern section. I managed the longer-than-planned run OK, except for it getting a bit muddy in places.

There have been some nice days for running recently. Here's Ginninderra parkrun's successful sub-30 pacing.

My running streak day 246

Posted by speedygeoff on Monday, May 13, 2019 with
Today before speedygeese training I ran a steady 7k with Kelley, then a 2k warmup with the geese. After that, I was jogging around supervising and doing another 2k to make 11k for the day. Christopher was seen early (in the car-park), Dave was there and did his own thing, and running 12 minutes of three person relays, and 12 minutes of two person relays, were Brownie, Rachel, Bernardo, Rae, Paul Q, Ruth, James, Max (new), Kahlia, Indigo, Deborah D, Jennie, George, Bron, Mick, and Richard.

Champagne for Brownie and Rachel's birthdays (58 and 28) were enjoyed by all who stayed.

Here's Ruth before she lost her voice:

All I Need (is the air I breath)

My running streak day 245

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, May 12, 2019 with
A cold foggy morning at Stromlo Forest Park; no other runners in sight but hundreds of cyclists. I ran an easy 5k on the grass track.

Deborah D's three protégés got big 5k PBs yesterday at Ginninderra. One was so excited she wanted a photo taken with me, for some obscure reason. Then today at the Mothers Day Classic 5k, they all improved dramatically again. Well done girls and Deborah!

Today I ran Ginninderra parkrun, pacing Rachel to break 30 minutes, as it turned out. My time was 29:58, and I totalled 7k for the day.

A bit of light rain didn't deter me from jogging 5k this morning. A comfortable 30 minutes from Kippax along the creek. I ran in the rain a bit after 10am because the forecast promised the rain to continue all day. Lets hope so.

I supervised the speedygeese training session, and consistent with current goals, jogged just 5k. Training, doing 4-5 x 400m and 4-5 x 200m were Ally and Peach, James (new), Vanessa H, Paul Q, Jennie, Mick, Lisa, Jen, Isaac, and Dave, with Erica tagging along. Afterwards nine of us including George enjoyed a meal at Snapper/Southern Cross Club on the lake.

It was my one visit to the gym for the week, and I took it fairly easy. And I got in a 5k run as well, nice and slow.
There has been no sun so far today....

My running streak day 240

Posted by speedygeoff on Tuesday, May 07, 2019 with
This sore area above the right ankle comes and goes/ It's only one of about six niggly spots, albeit the worst one on a bad day. Today was a good day, and I jogged a seriously slow 5k, as I may continue to do for the next three weeks so as to give myself half a fighting chance to complete 26 May's Half Marathon.

If, on the 26th, I were to feel like I do today, I will be OK.

Rae. And her brother David. ACTMA Mt Ainslie handicap.

My running streak day 239

Posted by speedygeoff on Monday, May 06, 2019 with
I jogged 5k today while running around with the speedygeese at training. The session was 25 minutes of short flagpole continuous relays - people ran a bit shorter each interval than last week's session but would have got more little intervals in. Running were Melissa (new), Vanessa H, Erica, Deborah D, Kahlia, Rachel, Bernardo, Rae, Gwen, Richard, Colin, Jennie, George, Paul Q, Anthony, Bron, Jenny M, me, with Dave in the distance not connecting, and a possible sighting of Christopher after the cool-down which may have been my imagination.[Edit: I checked Christopher's Strava: it was him I saw briefly.]

And this Thursday all are invited to Snapper on the Lake for fish 'n chips 'n beverages straight after training.

It was Queanbeyan parkrun's 2nd birthday (and my 71st) and I trotted around the parkrun course with Deborah and Tahlia. Other speedygeese there included Rachel, Cookie, Callum, Vanessa, Rae, Will; as below. I ran only the 5k plus an un-recorded mini warm-up.

I went to the gym for the only time this week and did an easy circuit. Later in the day I jogged 5k. I am pleased to continue my streak despite niggles, which seem to be clearing up.

My running streak day 235

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, May 02, 2019 with
With acute soreness from last Saturday's parkrun now easing, I ran a more comfortable 6k today while looking after the speedygeese. They ran 12 x 170m hill sprints on 2.5 minutes, which despite (or because of) the generous rest between each effort, the group found quite demanding. Doing the hill-work were Allie and Peach, Phil, Lisa, Colin, Paul Q, Michael, and Dave who seemed to have his own agenda as is often the case. I did go up the hill a couple of times, and I think Dave may have as well.

I am still hanging in there - an enjoyable 11k jog today, I tried not to run too fast.
