speedygeese training and a return to the gym

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 with
On Sunday I ran long (17k) at Stromlo Forest Park by myself. Kathy and Geoff Sims were arriving as I left.

On Monday Thommo and I ran 8k early, accompanied by visitors from WA Kevin and Sandra.
After that, at the main session with interval 600s, 400m recovery, were Ben, Caroline, Christopher, Colin, Garry. Me, Isaac, Jen, Peter, Thommo, and Ruth. So pleased to have a goof turnout despite the holiday season. Training for 2016 continues next Monday!

See where I run:
On Tuesday 29 December I returned to the gym after a long absence with injury, and did a one hour circuit, before going on a training run of 6k in 30:22. I have to be happy with that!

Stromlo run

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, December 27, 2015 with
I managed a longer run this morning. 17k. The hamstring still isn't quite 100%, but this was the run where, at last attempt, I had to go back after 1k when the injury occurred.

Golf course 10k

Posted by speedygeoff on Saturday, December 19, 2015 with
I didn't attend parkrun today, seeing as I'd raced Thursday night and I do not want to re-injure this left hamstring, which is healing nicely but not quite there yet. So I tried out new loops at the Belconnnen Golf course, to see what the western side is like, where I haven't recently been running. The run was not fully satisfactory though; parts of it had good shade, parts of it didn't.

warming up

Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, December 18, 2015 with
Today's run, another new course from home.

Today my one hour run took me one hour.

Tomorrow - parkrun, if I can get up in time. It's warming up, the early run will be good.

Mostly running pics. Some run. Some have even more fun than that.

After last night's 5k track run - the first this season (22:14) - and today's 10k, it will be a jogette in the park tomorrow.

Ginninderra Creek

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, December 17, 2015 with
I had some dental work at Kippax yesterday so didn't run early; it was warm at 11:30am and after seeing the dentist I ran only 5k. This was from Kippax and along the Ginninderra Creek corridor in search of shade, heading towards Macgregor. I often run around this area but not this exact course.

A couple of observations.

Suburban Macgregor. Living looks pleasant at the western end of the suburb. There is a house for sale fairly close to the creek near where I turned. I wouldn't mind living there!

Vertigo. Up until a year ago I had terrible vertigo. I would avoid footbridges for example. However I ran across the footbridge at Macgregor Primary, where in the last 30 years I would not have set one foot on it. My vertigo has 100% disappeared. This bodes well for returning to try out mountain running again!

Global warming. Summer heat is going to be terrible in 2015-16. I must drink more water. It has not been my habit to drink plain water. This must change. And drinking plenty of water instead of sweet drinks may help reduce the amount of dental work needed in the future, which can only be good.

How we trained in the last week

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 with
It has been hot, dry, earlier than usual this summer, and we cut back our Monday training session as a result. The Sunday mornings haven't been too bad. One annoying thing is the number of flies, pesky little things. I guess it means we are reluctant to stand around between efforts. One encouraging thing is the number of people participating in our various running activities each day. There is no shortage of people in Canberra staying fit and healthy by getting out and about and moving.

On Sunday 6th December at Stromlo Andrew, Dave, Thommo and I had an easy session, some ran km intervals. Sunday 13th at Stromlo Bron, Dave and I ran for an hour. Monday 14th at Parliament House Ewen and I ran 6k early in the shade mostly, then running 8 x Rose Garden 200m on 3 minutes were Alex, Andy, Caroline, Colin, Dave, Diana, Isaac, Jen, Pieta and Ruth.

I ended up totalling 17k on Monday this week, then 10k on Tuesday 15th at a good pace, Here is a pic of my Tuesday run's altitude to show that when I run from home there are some small hill options. It also shows one of the many benefits of training in Canberra: we are well above sea level. No sea breeze though.

Home is at 600m; the highest point is the south end of Hawker.

Starting back on the comeback trail again, again.

Posted by speedygeoff on Saturday, December 05, 2015 with
I ran 23:29 this morning taking it easy at Ginninderra Parkrun. The splits were 5:02, 4:36, 4:40, 4:44, 4:28. This is after a month (November) of virtually nothing with a hamstring injury. All's well.

Here is the cool-down run I did after, to bring the day's total to 15k and the week (with one day to go) 62k.

And here is the good run I did starting at 11:00am yesterday: 70:30 for an easy 12k

Things are looking up.
I expect to be back in the gym in another week. Or two.

"Adelaide 2015" See Where I Ran November visit

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, November 19, 2015 with
And now, my November Adelaide visit. Here's the sequence of walks and runs I did while there. Most of the time was spent feasting. Little running happened, due to a gammy leg.

Wednesday 11th 2k walk Murrays Hill Road (to check strapping was OK)

Thursday 12th 8k walk, Waterfall Gully to Mt Lofty summit and back.

Friday 13th 7k run in Coromandel Valley

Saturday 14th 10k run in Coromandel Valley. I ran up to the Blackwood Railway station. There was some detouring on the way as I helped a child on her bicycle find her lost family.

Monday 16th 5k run. It was starting to get too hot! I discovered Frank Smith reserve,

See where I ran - Lidcombe

Posted by speedygeoff on Saturday, July 11, 2015 with
I only had one run in Sydney last week, before a devastating cold started taking hold. Anyway here it is. An easy 10k run from our motel in Lidcombe. The rest of the week, health gradually deteriorated. Next time we stay in Sydney I might check in to a hotel with an indoor gym.

What's happening?

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, April 30, 2015 with
(1) Thursdays at Dickson oval is happening each week: 4:30pm for an easy 7k run; 5:30pm for training on the track under lights. We are doing long intervals there. Anyone can turn up and join in.

(2) This Saturday 2nd May I had planned to do the Shellharbour parkrun.
But...
Shellharbour parkrun is cancelled on 2 May 2015: Course has been damaged by torrential rain.
Nevertheless Jenny and I will have a few days' holiday in Kiama and Jamberoo, having a good time. Rain or shine.

(3) This Monday 4th May at Parliament House I will be bringing champagne for my birthday! We encourage everyone to do that on their birthday week; some "forget". May the fourth be with you.

(4) Our next group dinner will be another informal one at the Yacht Club, after training on Monday 11th May. Anyone may come; no need to confirm in advance.

(5) There's a "May Challenge" starting tomorrow of course. Please join in; many are! To print it, you can press "file"... "download as" "PDF document", and print that.

See where I ran - this is yesterday's 12k run after gym work at Kippax. I hadn't run up that hill through Flynn to Mount Rogers for many years. It's another sign my fitness levels are improving.

speedygeese training

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 with
Training on Thursday 16 April: At Dickson.
Running early were Miranda and I. Then on the oval were Colin, Janene, Jen, John (new), Julia, Louise (new), Stuart (new) and Susan. They ran 5 x 850m (two laps in lane 4) all off scratch, timed, a lap or so jog between each as they regathered. In future we will run these long intervals, not necessarily two-lappers, with handicap starts.

On Sunday at Stromlo Forest Park:
Dave, Andrew and I ran km intervals, with Dave continuing on to run some 400s. I was happy to average 4:15 for the kilometres, a real improvement.

Training on Monday 20 April at Parliament House:
Thommo and I ran early, 8k about 4 minutes quicker than usual. Then for the main training session on the hills, a repeat of last week, we had Andy, Diana, Jen, Nicole, Pieta, Ruth & Susan participating. Another good training session; it was nowhere near as cold as we imagined it might be, with Parliament House sheltering the west side hills from the strong wind.

My training is going well. I am on target this month. Two or three sessions in the gym each week, and each day's April Abs Challenge being completed despite how difficult it looked at the start. And I have felt strong since Friday.

For the May Challenge this year, I will repeat last November's, which I called the #SpeedyGeoff30DayChallenge, the first we did. I will set up a link to a spreadsheet soon.

See where we ran - more "new courses".
Thursday's 8k run from Dickson, avoiding the rough tracks around Mount Ainslie and Mount Majura.

Saturday's Tuggeranong Parkrun 5k course

My Tuesday 7k run from Energy Gym Kippax along the Ginninderra Creek and back, more sheltered than the golf course might have been (we have had quite strong winds the last few days)

Dickson Oval preview

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, April 09, 2015 with
Starting today, we return to Dickson oval for Thursday interval training. My Dickson oval page, copied from the "Our Training Venues" link above:

On Thursdays at 5:30pm the speedygeese meet at Dickson for training.
This occurs when track season is not on. i.e. the months April thru September
Parking is alongside the athletic track as indicated by the red circle on the map below.The track is 400m with 8 lanes, is all grass, and is lit by bright overhead lights

Even when wet the ovals are usually open. You can check availability at http://www.sport.act.gov.au/sportsgrounds/sportsground-booking-and-information under "wet weather and ground closures". Our training is cancelled at Dickson when the ground is officially closed.

Access to the oval is from Antill Street, Dickson.

The timetable is:
5:30pm: we commence a warm-up jog around the perimeter of the ovals or beyond
5:45pm: after a stretch back at the start, a second warm-up jog is usually held
6:00pm: we begin training on the 400m track.
6:30pm: intervals are finished and we complete a short cool-down.

The training session varies, and usually includes middle distance intervals done either on times, on distances, or in continuous relay teams.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Occasionally a few of us meet earlier, at 4:00pm sharp, for a long hilly run before joining in with the main session. We park in the same location. If you are interested, please check in the "coming events" and also let me know you are coming.
A typical course taken for the 4:00pm run is this lap around Mount Ainslie
Another is this loop on the old Bush Capital 25k course, past Mount Majura and down to the highway.
Both of these courses are around 13k in length.
dog day afternoon
Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 with
We trained at the Yarralumla dog park on Canberra Day Monday - well anyway, we parked there.
Dan, Miranda, Ruth and I ran at 4:30pm a lap around the paths outside the golf course
At 5:30pm we warmed up in Weston Park, then ran up Banks St to the oval where Alex, Andy, Azrianne, Garry, Helen, Julia, Miranda, Peter, Ruth and Vanessa ran a session of 12 x 40 seconds fast / 80 seconds slow, plus ten minutes tossing around a Frisbee!
It was lovely on the "Dog Park oval".
