Day eight rest day

Day eight goal: rest
Day eight actual: much needed rest

The speedygeese are everywhere this weekend. There are many Bush Capital Bush Marathon pics to show you this week, lots of success stories. But first...

Day seven

Posted by speedygeoff on Saturday, July 28, 2018 with
Day seven goal: usually a 5k parkrun or equivalent
Day seven actual: I ran the Bush Capital 10k in 55:01.
I am happy with that! There were some some steep climbs, including a longish one in the first kilometre.

I was the 5th male to finish. Despite being officially ancient.

There was also a 16k today for those wanting a longer and hillier run!

Day six and this week's training

Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, July 27, 2018 with
Day six goal: 60 minute gym circuit.
Day six actual: gym circuit achieved.

Day six goal: run 5k easy.
Day six actual: I jogged about half that, leaving space for a longer run than usual on Saturday.

This week’s speedygeese training sessions:

Sunday 22 July: [Dave]: "Another fun Speedygeese long run - Coolemon Ridge and McQuoids Hill." [see featured photos all this week.]

Monday 23 July at Parliament House: ten minutes of two person relays; 15 minutes of three person relays; on a short course so it was all go, no walking time. Participating were Deborah, Jennie, me, Bernardo, new David, Jen, Dave, Isaac, Warrick, Craig, Thomas and Giles.

Thursday 26 July at Parliament House: We ran 400m straights with 400m jog back. Runners included Jen, Isaac, Jennie, Brownie, Dave S (a.k.a. new David, note change of name) and me.

Day five

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, July 26, 2018 with
Day five goal: easy 5k
Day five actual: I did the session I had planned for yesterday, and ran a good 4 x 400m, totalling nearly 7k.
Yesterday my pulse hit 190 at the end of the session; today it didn't even reach 140, despite attempting to run quick. Go figure.

We run Sundays

Day four

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 with
Day four goal: a strength gym session. My plan is to spend 2-3 hours a week in the gym.
Day four actual: yes, and did an Active class first. So that was two hours of solid gym work.

Day four goal: run 4 x 400m at a good pace.
Day four actual: I have deferred this until tomorrow and I did tomorrow’s session instead: I ran an easy 5k after the gym work. Pulse was a bit high in the last 2k, into the 190's, so I won't double up gym work very often in future.

More pictures taken by Dave at last Sunday's long run.

Day two

Posted by speedygeoff on Monday, July 23, 2018 with
Day two goal: 30-minute fartlek run
Day two actual: After a warm-up, 10 minutes of tip-toeing around faster and slower, then 15 minutes of crazy short sprint intervals in a relay with the speedygeese. Cool-down. Total 8k.

"Fartlek is a Swedish word for speed play. This is a non-structured workout in which you run at a steady pace and add in short surges of faster running."

It is grandson Josiah's 18th birthday today. I will be partying with him tomorrow.

Day one

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, July 22, 2018 with
Day one goal: rest.
Day one actual: rest.

"Rest is not just a day off; it is an important and planned part of a training program. Rest allows your muscles to recover and strengthen."

Sunday will be my "rest" day. Sometimes I will run. Usually as a "catch-up". Not today.

Who can you see here? Some of the crowd at this morning's speedygeese long run. an overnight temperature of minus 6.2 did not deter over twenty runners and a dog. I think Dave Clarke took this photo. Sometimes I may join them on my "rest" day.

Day zero

Posted by speedygeoff on Saturday, July 21, 2018 with
Before I attempt to start a new training program I like to "race" and get a "before" mark.
Steady 5:30s or so is OK I think.
That was today's YCRC 5k run easily except I probably wouldn't have gone much faster, pushing the pace.
Slow and steady will help get me through.
The plan is to run 6 days and go to the gym 2 or 3 days each week.
And post plan/actual here.

My first attempt lasted 28 days. My second, 1 day.

We'll see how it goes.

This week’s speedygeese training sessions

Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, July 20, 2018 with
Sunday 15 July: Run report [Dave]:
Looks like William didn’t do his video today so here’s an abbreviated Speedygeese long run report.
12 Speedygeese turned up at Ainslie for a reasonably flat run around Mt Ainslie (and Mt Pleasant for those who did the long version). 6 geese, including me, did the 12k and 6 did the 18k.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing but was all good fun. In 0 degrees with no sun, William and Thach shot to the lead early and took us down a wrong path. We ended up back on track until Jen kept trying to take us the wrong way on a course she designed 😱. (I think she’s come to realise that it’s okay to just chill (literally) and go with the flow when you’re on the wrong track).
When it was time for the short runners to head back to the start (short as in short course not short as in me 😂), everyone except Jen decided they didn’t want to do the extra 6k after all. Jen and I did a fine job of convincing 5 of them to follow her.
Giles did the short version but ended up with 20 plus km after running from and to home. Thach and Allie (welcome Allie - sorry I didn’t catch your dog’s name, but enjoyed the encounter with him/her, which shall not be described here in detail 🤣) were last seen well ahead of the short run pack. William disappeared early, but there is video evidence on fb of him running in the airport terminal (not sure if they caught him) 😱 😱
By the time we finished it was a balmy 2 degrees. Half of us ended up at Edgar’s (inside thanks to me 😜) for coffee and fuel.
Meanwhile, 6 Speedygoats headed up Mt Tennent (1,000m) elevation. What else can I say? Were not sure whether they are tough or insane, but we admire them whichever it is. 👏 💪
Well it wasn’t so short after all (sorry 🤣). Let’s do it all again next weekend. 😃

Monday 16 July at Parliament House: Running 12 x 170m mostly uphill on 150 seconds were Bernardo, Isaac, Jen, Craig, new David, Dave, Rae, Vanessa, Pieta, Brownie and me.

Thursday 19 July at Parliament House: Just six of us on a very cold night running a 1200m fast followed by 15 minutes of fast/slow 200m laps on the small oval. I partly participated while Giles, Brendan Isaac, Dave and Jen did the session.

This week’s speedygeese training sessions

Posted by speedygeoff on Saturday, July 14, 2018 with
Sunday 08 July at the Cotter. The water was cold.

Monday 09 July at Parliament House: Richard (new) and Brownie did the warmup; I just jogged while a session of 4-5 x 800m each with a 400m recovery jog was completed by Bernardo, Lisa, Warrick, Jen, Isaac, Jennie, Deb and Craig,

Thursday 12 July at Parliament House: I supervised, Brownie ran part of the session, while Giles, Jen, Warrick and Jennie ran 20 hill sprints, after which we were happy to share champagne to celebrate Giles turning 45 this Monday.

YCRC newsletter

Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, July 13, 2018 with
No Club events this weekend, but next week sees the Runners’ Shop 2/5/10k at Grevillea Park on Saturday 21 July. The 2 km is at 12.45 pm, the 5 km at 1.00 pm and the 10 km at 1.30 pm. This is one of the premier events on our winter program and is sponsored by The Runners Shop – so lots of vouchers up for offer, both for the top end of the field and barrel draws for the rest of us (as well as one for the volunteers). As mentioned last week, these events will be run jointly with AACT and LAACT, and will incorporate the ACT Road Championships. As usual this is free to YCRC and AACT/LAACT members, otherwise $10 adults, $5 under 18s. Just sign up on the day. Check out the new course on our Facebook page.
A reminder that we are always looking for helpers for our winter series events. If you can help out at any of our winter series races, please contact Dave Osmond atdavo.osmond@gmail.com.
Sunday 22 July will be the first session for our popular Canberra Times Fun Run Training Group. While there is no 14k at the Fun Run this year, the program will still cater for those who are looking at this as an intermediate step before tackling a half marathon a bit further down the track. Over the years this program has developed a great reputation for the fabulous support provided by the co-ordinators, Jo Legge-Wilkinson and George Masri, along with all their helpers. So if you, or anyone you know, would like a bit of help to get motivated to train through the Canberra winter, this is a great program to join. Click here for more information or to register.
As noted previously, the Club is a strategic partner for the Canberra Times Fun Run on 23 September. This means we are providing both volunteers and pacers for the event. Please contact Paul Mahoney (wphe625@hotmail.com) if you are able to volunteer on the day. We have a range of roles to fill including drivers and cyclists as well as on the start line, so let him know if you have any particular preference. And contact Paul Trumble (trumblep@hotmail.com) if you are interested in a pacer role.
The ACT Masters' 37th Annual Half Marathon on 19 August at Lake Ginninderra will also be the Australian Masters national championships. This event is open to all competitors over 30, so a good opportunity to run a fast half marathon course with good competition. See the ACT Masters website for more details.
And finally, we had a problem with the delivery of the Jogalong Jottings at our July Jogalong. This is now available online at the bottom of our Jogalong webpage. We are hoping to resume the regular posting of the Jottings online, so that if you don’t make it along you can still catch up with all the news. We are also considering the need for a hard copy version, so if you have any views please let Lucy or Annemarie know at the next Jogalong.

I have been away from cold Canberra the last couple of days, so this song isn't totally inappropriate.
