Rosemary Longstaff led the way as the first female distance runner in Canberra. In the 1970s, I was warming up for a 6k race in Stromlo Forest, where Stromlo Forest Park is now, and I came across Rosemary looking for the start of an Orienteering event. I told her about the 6k, she ran it, and the rest is history. Perhaps I shouldn't imply I kicked off her career; orienteers might have a good case to say that they did.

Rosemary was always smiling, although she claimed it was a grimace. Her fastest marathon, to my best recollection, is 2:43.
