“Adelaide 2015” - 5 October. 5000m gold medal

Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, October 30, 2015 with
It was a rather hot day - the temperature reached 36 degrees, with the northerly an apparent temperature of 40 degrees. And my 5000m race was at 11:00am. so I took water at the 1k mark and every lap after that. Surprisingly I did not feel too bad at the end.

“Adelaide 2015” - 4 October. 1500m silver medal

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, October 29, 2015 with
It was very hot again and some cloud cover was most welcome.

A second silver medal, this time for the 1500m. Most welcome. too

Three happy placegetters in the M65 1500m.

And who should also be running but Liam Hanna, formerly of Canberra. He was quicker than me in three races, winning his M70 events by a street. Lucky I am not in his age-group until 2018.

And we bumped into Byron and Ishara from Canberra when we walked around into King William Street to get some Thai take-away for dinner that day. Byron used to run with the "speedyducks", a speedygeese spin-off.

These were the first of several surprise encounters on our trip.

It's more fun running with company

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 with

Speedygeese training:
Sunday at Stromlo Forest Park Andrew
was there; others were at the Vets handicap event. I shall rejoin him next week.

Monday at Parliament House: I ran early; an easy 6k which I run each week usually with company. Then we enjoyed a short intense relay session (3 person teams for 14 minutes; 2 person teams for 12+). Training were Alex, Andrew, Andy, Bron, Caroline, Cathy, Colin, Diana, Dom, Garry, me, Julia, Ruth & Warrick. And Christopher was there doing a walking recovery from Sunday’s race.

This was followed by a meal at the Yacht Club; Dave turned up in addition to my Jenny, plus many who had trained earlier, Bron, Dom, Andy, Warrick, Gary, Caroline, Christopher, Ruth and myself. It was warm enough to be seated outside... that is, until the cold change blew in.

Our next dinner will be a Christmas function on 7 December, replacing training that night. Venue tba.

“Adelaide 2015” - 3 October. 800m silver medal

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, October 25, 2015 with
I opened my Australian Masters Games account on Saturday 3 October with a silver medal in the 800m.
I hadn't trained for the 800m but as it was the first event it was a chance to get familiar with the track and with the opposition, and a chance settle the nerves.
The day was stinking hot with a strong and choking northerly wind down the back straight, almost stopping one to a stand-still.
My throat was raspy after one lap but I managed to run 93+92 second laps.
Awfully slow but good enough for silver.
Not close to the winner, in fact would have had to break the ACT M65 record to have won it.
Alan Mayfield is a class act. He had also entered the 1500m the next day which I was to run, and also the steeplechase which I was not to run. Fortunately he was not entered in my other three events after that.

Waiting for the 800m start. They were running very late.

recent speedygeese training sessions

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 with
On Sunday at Stromlo Forest Park Andrew and I ran 12k. We have turned Sundays into a longer running day, and plan to add some short surges on the grassy cross country track to the end of our long run. When we are fit enough.

Then on Monday at Parliament House, Julia and I ran early; we stopped for a chat with Abi on our run; then the main session of surges and jogs on a 600m loop was attended by Andy, Caroline, Christopher, Colin, Dave, Garry, me, Jen, Julia, Pieta, Rae, Susan & Warrick.

Next Monday 26th we will be having an informal dinner at the Yacht Club after training, our final Yacht Club dinner for 2015. (There WILL be a December get-together elsewhere).

small world

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, October 18, 2015 with
In Adelaide I had turned the corner from South Terrace into King William street and was about to go into an Asian restaurant to collect take-away when I heard my name called. Sitting there were Canberra friends Byron and Ishara, with baby Ziva.

Noting this on Facebook, I received a comment from mutual friend Amanda, reminding me she lived in Adelaide now with husband Duane, so we dropped in to see her and her children Zara and Audra.

Both Byron, and Amanda, ran with the "speedyducks" group I used to train on Saturday mornings. It looks as though they are quite busy now!

While in Adelaide we did catch up with relatives, including long lost cousins, but seeing other friends was a bonus.
