New running streak day 2

Time 6:00am
Course Spofforth Street
Distance 2.5k
Feeling hot and uncomfortable so cut it short. I will have to rise earlier!
Air Quality Index 60
Temperature 23
Weight 71.2

Emily doing her substitute parkrun. Local parkruns were all cancelled last Saturday. It is most wise to stay inside (gym, pool) when it is so smoky outside.

A new running streak day 1

Posted by speedygeoff on Monday, December 30, 2019 with
I suppose one day isn't a streak, but it has potential. Tired of not running because of heat and smoke, I have changed the habit of a (recent) lifetime and got up early.

Time 6:00am
Distance 4.5k
Running easy but not easy
Air Quality Index 116
Temperature 21
Weight 70.5

Inaction is a choice.

Where the ocean meets the sky, I'll be sailing.

speedygeese training Monday 23/12

Posted by speedygeoff on Tuesday, December 24, 2019 with

It looks very Christmassy .. and most weeks are like this.
Thanks Ruth photos, James champagne, Jenny mince pies.

Training consisted of 200m intervals with 100m float. Most did 9x, some did 12x, Richard did 15x.

Present were Peter, Andrew, Pieta, Richard, Gwen, Liam (new), Ewen, Max, James, Ruth, Brad (new), Jenny, Dave, Paul, Jen, Isaac, Daniel, Brownie, Yelena and me makes 20.

I ran 11k for the day, it's good to get out again after a week off because of unprecedented smoke across the ACT.

My plan A in coming days is: Wed 25th Burley Griffin parkrun (first timer), Sat 28th Ginninderra parkrun, Mon 30th next SG training session, Wed 1st Mt Ainslie parkrun, and Thu 2nd resume Thursday training at SFP.

Running on hold

Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, December 20, 2019 with

Great pics from Lisa. Just as Lisa has put running on hold to recover from an operation for a burst appendix (ouch!), many of us have cancelled training sessions, to avoid inhaling the excessive smoke that has been rolling into Canberra. As for me, no running, and still my head, throat, and chest do not feel quite normal. And eyes, eyes are worse.

Present - Jacob G, Brownie, Colin, Celina, Yelena, Clare, Tim, Dave and me. We set out to run up to five 1km loops. But the wind totally changed direction half way through, a big smoky cloud rolled in, and we hurriedly left!

Everything is getting worse the next few days. Future looking bleak.

Monday speedygeese training

Posted by speedygeoff on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 with
There was quite a bit of smoke around, although by the time we met for training, some of it (mainly south of the lake) was starting to clear when a south-westerly wind came up. As a precaution, we did half our usual running, just 15 minutes of a short course relay near the Rose Gardens. Warrick and I jogged, doing the relay were Narelle, Patrick, Rae, David, Paul, Rohan, Jenny, Vanessa, Allie and Peach.

Thursday night training

A gale blowing at Stromlo, easily the strongest I have experienced there in many visits, did not deter us from running a warmup, three 1k laps where we ran 5 fast 200s and 5 fast 100s, all with equivalent recoveries, and a cooldown, I totalled 8k. Present were Brownie, Colin, Rohan, Paul, Don, Jennie, Isaac, Jen, Matt. Yelena and me.

The gale blew my beard away.

Monday night training

Posted by speedygeoff on Tuesday, December 03, 2019 with
A cold and windy Monday, with flurries of rain in some parts of the ACT, plus a pointless protest by a very large and noisy crowd at Parliament House, didn't deter 12 of us from running our 930m intervals and stopping at the occasional exercise station for push-ups, dips, chin-ups, and crunches. Present were Peter (new), Ruth (jellybeans), Jennie, Jenny (lemon drizzle cake), me, Dave, Cat (35 on the 1st), Paul, Patrick, David, Deborah, and James. Plus Gwen (champagne) arrived at the end of our cool-down. Happy Birthday, Cat.

Rosemary the trailblazer

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, December 01, 2019 with
Rosemary Longstaff led the way as the first female distance runner in Canberra. In the 1970s, I was warming up for a 6k race in Stromlo Forest, where Stromlo Forest Park is now, and I came across Rosemary looking for the start of an Orienteering event. I told her about the 6k, she ran it, and the rest is history. Perhaps I shouldn't imply I kicked off her career; orienteers might have a good case to say that they did.

Rosemary was always smiling, although she claimed it was a grimace. Her fastest marathon, to my best recollection, is 2:43.
