Foggy Ruth

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, March 30, 2014 with
Mark in your diaries, Thursdays at Dickson starts on 10 April. It will probably be 4:00pm for the early run, but definitely 5:30pm for warming up to train on the track or on the various ovals there.

Also we resumed Saturday morning runs at Acton Ferry Terminal yesterday. Meeting times Saturday? We will play it by ear; call me to negotiate or check here for final details each week. The first week saw Andy, Susan and Miranda accompany me around the ANU, the CSIRO, and the Botanic Gardens for a pleasant 10.5k.

Great photo of Ruth at yesterday's Ginninderra parkrun. Just as foggy as her photo in the slideshow (above). To navigate forward or backwards through the slideshow, click on the arrows!

Great form too. And look! There are runners behind her!

Finally, Sarah-Jayne ran an incredible 19:08 yesterday in her first Albury Wodonga parkrun. I am so looking forward to her returning to Canberra at the end of the year. Abi and Andrew and Jen and Kym and Dave, you had better keep training and get fitter if you want to keep Sarah-Jayne honest!

Australian Running Festival (Canberra Marathon weekend)

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, March 27, 2014 with
Would you like to see the list of entrants & race numbers for the Australian Running Festival? The “entrant list” is available at http://register.au.eventdirector.net/List/5480.
The festival website itself is at http://runningfestival.com.au/.
The big weekend of racing is only 16 days away.
On Sunday 13th I will be cheering the marathon from around the 34k/37k mark, somewhere near the Weston Park end of Yarralumla.

Speedygeese training: for those not peaking for the marathon (or ultra), speedygeese training at Dickson Oval will begin on Thursday 10 April at 5:30pm. As in previous years when we have trained at Dickson, I will be arriving there before 4:00pm and heading off for a longer run first.

Other events of note:
For track runners during the winter months, Athletics ACT will again be conducting High Noon events on selected Sundays from 12 noon (of course) until 1:30. The proposed dates are:
· 11 May
· 1 June
· 22 June
· 6 July
· 27 July
· 10 August
· 31 August * tbc
· 21 September

ACTVAC Cross Country Championships
These will again be conducted jointly with AACT, and will be at Stromlo Forest Park on 19th of July. A draft timetable document is found here. (pdf file)

ACTVAC Track & Field Presentation Night
Friday, April 11 at the Belconnen Soccer Club in Hawker
Corner of Belconnen Way & Springvale Drive.
Dinner from the Bistro at 6.30
Awards start at 7 30.
The Charles Hawker Room will be set up so that members can have their meals in there as well.

Everyone should exercise

Let's trust it is not too wet out there at the Running Festival. Not all of us are wet weather specialists.

Recent training sessions

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 with
Wet weather this week - I hope it lasts a bit longer. Not for the Running Festival in less than three weeks time, though.

On Saturday I did my first long run (other than the previous Sunday's Half Marathon race) and revisited an old hilly course I used to run from home which takes in the long downhill next to Coulter Drive, Weetangera. I hadn't measured it before and it turned out to be a bit shorter than the 15k I expected and I even had to run a loop at the end to make it up to 14k. That was far enough for now!

14k Coulter Drive 22 March

Altitude

On Sunday 23 March the speedygeese met @ Stromlo Forest Park: Andrew and Dave ran 3 x 1km with me watching. It seemed quite cool but the sweat was dripping.

Then Monday 24 March at Parliament House it rained lightly through the session. I ran a soggy 6k early, then the speedygeese, Abi, Bronwyn, Christopher, me, Jen & Ruth ran on the firm grass of the small oval 12 x 200 on 2 mins with 200m jog. The surface there was relatively dry and it had been marked out for soccer. Have you ever seen a circular (mini-)soccer field before?

Starting Practice

Posted by speedygeoff on Saturday, March 22, 2014 with
Do we need some starting practice at our Sunday morning training sessions? Dave employed a "back of the pack" starting technique in Hobart recently. When the starting gun fired for his 5000m and 10000m events, the track runners were off but Dave was one stride length back, half turned away, looking at his stop watch as he pressed it....

It is worth practising every aspect of your event...

Meanwhile in Jamberoo we recently visited our eldest daughter's family (of six). We went over to Albion Park Little Athletics to watch number two (of six) compete in the 200m hurdles and the 200m.

SpeedyJennyGran at the Albion Park track with number six (of six). Another three or four years and she will join Little Athletics I imagine, she is very keen and appears never to tire. She ran to the end of the field and sprinted back to show us her speed, three or four times. All part of a normal day.

Number six (of six), unprompted, showing us her starting technique. Well she is only two!

YCRC Newsletter

YCRC News Thursday 20th March 2014
1. General Information
2. YMCA Women and Girls 5k Fun Run/Walk 6tth April
3. Australian Running Festival 12/13th April 2013
4. YCR Winter Season – Starts Saturday 26th April
5. First Aid Volunteers Required.
6. YMCA of Canberra Half Marathon w/e 17/18th May 2014

1. General Information – A very successful summer series was concluded at Stromlo Forest Park on Tuesday 18th March where we had 100 runners. We would like to thank everyone who helped or came along and run, jogged or walked in these events.

Club events are all about participation, we do however need the assistance of club members to organise these events and also participate in same. Running faster over shorter distances and different terrain can and will help your running. We are hoping that having our winter events in the middle of the day will attract more of you to come along and try. Our shorter events are great for those school children looking to run well in schools cross country.

Our Club conducts two major events during the year the first being the YMCA Women and Girls Fun Run Walk and the second is the YMCA of Canberra Half Marathon. With no major sponsors these events are expensive for the club to stage. We ask that you either help or run in these events if you wish them to continue. The W&G’s normally has somewhere near 1,000 entrants and the half marathon around 400 entrants. There are generous discounts for club members.

2. YMCA Women and Girls 5K Fun Run/Walk - 9am Sunday – 6TH April – 29th Year - Women and Girls Fun Run registrations for 6 April 2014 are now open. This event supports OvCan ACT. Full details are on the website at: http://www.canberra.ymca.org.au/runnersclub/events/Pages/Women-and-Girls-Fun-Run.aspx

Women and Girl's Fun Run - EARLY BIRD CLOSING DATE EXTENDED
Due to entry problems experienced online, the closing date for Early Bird entries has been extended to Sunday, 23 March at midnight. The final closing date for entries is Thursday, 3 April at 5pm.

Women and Girls’ Fun Run School Teams - All schools in the ACT are being contacted about entering teams in the Fun Run on 6 April as there are prizes in primary and secondary categories. If your children haven’t heard about a team from your school, please make some enquiries to try to generate more interest. A5 Flyers promoting the Fun Run on one side and the Jogalong on the other side are available from me kene@incanberra.com.au If you can noticeboard these at your place of work that would great.

YMCA Women and Girls’ Fun Run – Help - It is less than three weeks to our clubs first major event of 2014 and we urgently required more volunteers. If you can help for a few hours on the Sunday it would be much appreciated. If you send me an email kene@incanberra.com.au I will forward yourdetails to Sheri- Nouane Duncan-Jones, the event volunteers coordinator.

3. Australian Running Festival - Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th April 2014
The ARF is conducted by Fairfax Events and the YCRC are a strategic partner providing Fairfax with volunteers to assist conduct the festival over the two days. On Saturday fun runs over 5k and 10k are conducted and on the Sunday the half marathon, marathon and ultra-marathon (50k) will be run.

The club is looking for volunteers to assist with management of runners (not traffic) on each course. Roles include marshals, bike riders and start/finish team members. Approximately 30 club members are required for each of Saturday 12 (from 6:30 am to 10:00 am) and Sunday 13 (typical time from 7:00 am to noon, but some roles will vary). This is a major fund-raiser for the club as well as a chance to help and encourage runners through this iconic event. Please consider your availability to help.

If you can help with any of the following please email me kene@incanberra.com.au and I will forward your details to the relevant event coordinator.

4. YCRC Winter Series 2014 commences Saturday 26th April – Rear Campbell Park Offices – Northcott Drive, Campbell.
The first race of the YCRC Winter Series will be on Saturday 26 April at Campbell Park. Following feedback we received from Club members at the conclusion of last year’s series, we have made some changes for this year. Firstly, most events will now be on Saturday afternoons, with a 2 km race starting at 12.45. Except for major races, the two longer events will start at the same time at 1 pm. We will also have several events throughout the season early on Saturday mornings to accommodate those runners who can’t make Saturday afternoons, and these will also provide longer options, including some trail runs using the new Canberra Centenary Trail. Please keep an eye on the newsletter for details on the start times for upcoming events.

In designing the program we have tried to accommodate a wide range of runners and interests. We have introduced some new courses in response to suggestions from our survey last year, and have included ‘lead up’ events to major races like the Half Marathon and Canberra Times Fun Run. Several people had suggested having an event at the Arboretum, however at this stage the Arboretum people are a bit difficult to work with, as they are still sorting out their arrangements, but we are hoping to include a course there in 2015. We are still in the process of having our courses approved so there may be changes to the originally published program. For example, we have just been advised that we are not able to conduct events in the Jerrabomberra Wetlands, so are now looking at alternatives for the event scheduled for 9 August. These changes will be updated on the website and notified through the newsletter.

For the competitive among you, there are male and female Distance Runner and Junior (under 20) Distance Runner of the Year awards, which are point scores held across 6 events throughout the winter (best 4 to count). These events are marked on the program and will be promoted in the newsletter. The winner of each series gets their names engraved on our perpetual trophies (which they get to keep for the year), and also receives a $100 voucher from the Runners Shop (senior) or $50 (junior). These awards are only available to Club members, so make sure you are signed up well before our first event on 3 May.

For others, the winter series offers the opportunity to have a go at a variety of events in a low-key environment. If you want to discover some new places to run and meet up with other runners looking to improve their fitness, there are events to suit you. We welcome feedback on the series, so let us know whether you like the courses, start time options etc.

The series kicks off with a run on the dirt trails on the lower slopes of Mt Ainslie, starting at the Defence offices at Campbell Park on Northcott Drive. Northcott Drive is off Fairbairn Avenue, just one kilometre past the Australian War Memorial. Take Northcott Drive around the back or airport side of Campbell Park Offices. We should have our banner or tear drop flag denoting the start/finish area. A 2k will start at 12.45pm with the 6k starting at 1pm.

David Osmond is looking for helpers and managers for all the Winter Series events. Please contact him at davo.osmond@gmail.com if you are able to assist.

Our recent training sessions

Sunday 16 March speedygeese @ Stromlo Forest Park
Andrew, Lucia, Abi attended - Abi ran sets of 200m fast/200m float. Very fast in fact.
Andrew and Lucia ran 3 x 1k with a 1k jog. Very fast as well.
A lovely morning for training (while some of us were running a half marathon instead)

Monday 17 March speedygeese @ Parliament House
Ewen and I ran 8k early.
The main session was 20 x 100m hill sprints on 90 seconds. Present were Andy, Christopher, Colin, Jen, Kelley, Kim, Marilyn, Ruth & me. An enjoyable session where the Half Marathon runners managed to complete the session successfully. Even me! My return to training is well on track! It was good to have Kelley return to our interval session. There were three new people who I thought might come along. but no such luck, not yet.

I like making new friends.

Half a Marathon

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, March 16, 2014 with
Some of the highlights from this morning's Weston Creek Half Marathon:
It was good to catch up with Sarah Pau and with Annette Sugden. And I think I saw Katherine Sheppard out on the course.
Jen ran a blinder, 91 minutes, big PB. Third female outright.
Maria ran an extra 6k after following runners she thought were in the race. Despite that she still won the W55 category, running 27k faster than any other W55s ran 21k.
Bronwyn ran a good time, around 1:51, leading up to her marathon.
Other highlights were Bruce Graham out training on the course, Martin Dent doing the awards, several speedygeese winning barrel draw prizes.
All I can say about my run is that I will start training properly tomorrow.

So some comic relief.

Kristian and I trained together at Acton Ferry Terminal some Saturdays in 2013. He ran in the Weston Creek Half Marathon in March that year where he met some of the geese. Kristian's time for the Half was 1:45.09. And he ran his first parkrun soon after, the Ginninderra parkrun in 21:50, and his only other run there a month later, 21:54.

Here is Kristian's recent report on the arrival of his second child:
"Well it only took us four weeks, but we have a name for our precious daughter. Sathya Lily born on 7 Feb 2014, weighing 2.7kgs, length 49cms. Welcome to our crazy family and this big bright beautiful world.
"Sathya is sanscrit for 'Truth', Avinash my son who is 6, his name means 'indestructible'. Pity everything he touches is not!"

...and the winner is...

...while at training on Monday, Andrew, Bronwyn, Christopher. Michelle, Garry, Miranda, Ruth and Ewen in bare feet ran on Yarralumla Oval behind Banks St laps of about 400m, handicapped, with 400m jog between each; we were visited by Caroline and by Leonie (new); and I was there too after doing the early run with Andrew, Ewen and Miranda around the outside of the golf course and into Weston Park.

There that's my blog post done, now to update some of the slides following good performances in Hobart...

400m 2nd 1:19.40
800m 3rd 3:16.53
In the 1500m I am guessing a big sprint finish by Tony to pass several runners down the home straight. But in the 800m first was 3:16.28 and second 3:16.38.

Relays: Kym, Cathy, Sue Bourke & Raelene Campbell ran in both relays. They were 10th in the 4 x 100m and 7th in the 4 x 400m.

A short essay on how and when we came to be called the speedygeese

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, March 05, 2014 with
This is about how the name “speedygeese” originated. With advice from Ewen I set up this blog in January 2005. Ewen said I needed a blogger name and suggested “speedygeoff” which I liked and adopted. In March 2005 after hearing a story about geese I adopted it for the blog and submitted it to Vetrunner as well. The original goose story is at http://geoffmoore.blogspot.com.au/2005/03/fly-goose-fly.html. Subsequently I wrote a five part series of posts about geese which appeared in the blog in March and April 2006. Visit the archives if you want to browse these posts. Also in April that year I noticed a women’s fun run team called “speedylegs” which was run and won by mother and daughter pair of Kathy and Ann Southgate. Geese became a bit of a theme in 2006 with cartoons etc, until in September for the Canberra Times Fun Run the training group entered a team which I called “Speedy Geese”. For the next three months we were “Speedy Geese” and the name “speedygeese” without the blank first appeared at the end of December 2006 when I described what we as a training group would be doing into 2007. So let’s say the official genesis of the speedygeese was Sunday 17 September 2006, Canberra Times Fun Run day. By the way, we won the team event.

We could have been the flashducks, but that was already taken.

What the speedygeese have been up to recently in training:
On Sunday 2 March speedygeese @ Stromlo Forest Park Jen and I jogged; Jen had just completed a 50k walk the previous day.

On Monday 3 March @ Parliament House Miranda, Ewen and I ran 8k early; then at 5:30pm we ran a “Tour de Hills” with Abi, Andy, Bronwyn, Ewen, Jen, Marilyn, Mick C, Miranda, Ruth & me running the circuit, Colin running it twice, and Warrick just turning up. Afterwards we had a meal at the Yacht Club: Abi, Andy, Anna, Ewen, me, Jen, Marilyn, Mick, Ruth. We will do that every few weeks.

I won't be at training this Sunday morning.

More importantly, there is a change of venue for this Monday only:
Monday 10 March is the Canberra Day public holiday. There may be a fair bit of activity around Parliament House. Just in case, regardless of what is happening at Parliament House, we will train at Banks Street Yarralumla. We will park at the Dog Park, which is just south of the cycle path as it passes Weston Park. Times are as usual; 4:30pm for a longer run and 5:30pm for our usual warmup leading into an interval session.
