speedygeese training report

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 with
Monday afternoon was pleasant for running in Canberra.

At the 5:00pm run were Miranda, Ruth and I; then at 5:30pm after our warm-up we went down towards old Parliament House and ran zig-zag relays, with Alex, Andy, Christopher, Colin, Dan, Diana, Ewen, Garry, Isaac, Julia, Marie, Miranda, Nicole, Peter, Thommo, Pieta, Ruth, Susan & Warrick taking part, and Jen fresh from the six foot track taking photos, and me supervising the runners.

Afterwards - a dinner at the Yacht Club with 17 participants. It was not too cold so we were outside on the balcony eating out fish and chips, burgers, squid or whatever.

Results: and explaining the age/sex adjustment (AST)

Posted by speedygeoff on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 with
After Saturday's Gungahlin parkrun, I was delighted to see a Facebook post from Chilli Man which highlighted Kelly Varey's great run for second place over the line and first based on AST, and which mentioned that I was third on AST.

For those not in the know, AST% is a very simple formula which enables performance comparison across all ages and both genders.

The formula is "MY AST = WORLD BEST TIME / MY TIME * 100" where world best is a figure for one's age and gender, usually in five year age ranges but can be for single years.

I reversed the formula to see what time I needed to get the same AST as Kelly:
"NEW GOAL TIME = WORLD BEST * 100 / Kelly's AST"

Of course you don't need to know or calculate what "WORLD BEST" is; eliminating that, the formula reduces to
"NEW GOAL TIME = MY AST * MY TIME / Kelly's AST"
and the result was, I had to run 20:50 to achieve her AST. This is slightly more achievable than the sub 20 goal I have had for a long while now. Both goals are not impossible.

The parkruns always show ASTs but I have not been showing them when I record parkrun results here, let alone taking any notice of them up until now.

AST% FOOTNOTES

1. As you can see from the formula, AST% cannot be negative, no matter how long you run for.

2. However AST% can exceed 100% - provided you beat the world best!

3. World best factors are smoothed- so the world best might actually differ slightly from a time which gives you 100%.

The YCRC 2015 Winter Program is now available

Posted by speedygeoff on Saturday, March 14, 2015 with

From the YCRC President:
"The full YCRC program for 2015 is now available [here] on the website. Hard copies are also available at our runs and other venues such as the Runners Shop and Kingston Physio. Thanks to those who provided input to the review of the winter series. As a result we have reduced the length of the season and are conducting fewer events. All 12 events are included for the senior Distance Runner of the Year award, with the best 8 results to count. The junior award will be the best 6 out of the 10 designated events. As there can be late changes to venues and other arrangements, please check the website closer to the event and don't rely solely on the initial publication, particularly later in the season. We will be requiring volunteers to help at these events. If you are able to do so, and in particular if you are prepared to be a race manager for one of our runs, please contact David Osmond."

On the way to Falkirk railway station and departure for Edinburgh... we stopped for morning tea at the Falkirk wheel... an amazing piece of machinery, a boat lift which carries (mainly tourist) boats up and down two different levels of canal.

dog day afternoon

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 with
We trained at the Yarralumla dog park on Canberra Day Monday - well anyway, we parked there.

Dan, Miranda, Ruth and I ran at 4:30pm a lap around the paths outside the golf course

At 5:30pm we warmed up in Weston Park, then ran up Banks St to the oval where Alex, Andy, Azrianne, Garry, Helen, Julia, Miranda, Peter, Ruth and Vanessa ran a session of 12 x 40 seconds fast / 80 seconds slow, plus ten minutes tossing around a Frisbee!

It was lovely on the "Dog Park oval".

You can see each runner clearly, and if you pause the video here and there, a few of the expressions are priceless.

Interesting that the only runners breathing loudly are those who have trained with us. Practising what I have preached!

speedygeese news

Dog Park training
Monday 9th being Canberra Day, there may be lots of activity around Parliament House.
So as is our custom, we shall meet at the Yarralumla Dog Park on that day.
Its location is on Banks Street, at the end nearest Weston Park.
4:30pm for an early, long, easy run; optional.
5:30pm for a warm-up run before interval training on grass.

Group dinner
On Monday 16th, after speedygeese training at Parliament House, we will have our next group dinner.
Southern Cross club - Yarralumla Yacht Club
Meet us there from ~ 6:45pm if you won't be at training first.
We will be ordering over the counter.
If it is a warm evening we will be out on the balcony.
No need to book, anyone can come along, including children.

Blog slide show
You may have noticed I have added many more slides to the slideshow at the head of this website. More to come.

Dickson training
We will resume Thursday training sessions at Dickson oval on 9 April, the Thursday after Easter (but before the marathon). I plan to attend each Thursday, meeting at 5:30pm. If there is interest in an early Thursday run, I may be able to do that as well. Mondays at Parliament house will continue regardless.

Down the coast
I will be heading down the coast today, to stay in Jamberoo with some of the granddchildren for a few days over the long weekend. It's almost the coast. But I am planning to check out the Shellharbour Parkrun while I am there, with a view to seeing if I can get a group of us to go down sometime for a day or two away. It's not a fast course but it's very scenic. Part of the run is on the beach, and there's a climb or two. I don't think there's a swim section, I will let you know. Miranda had the W60 record there for a while, I might get to see her while we are there, and maybe pace her to regain the record?

See where we went: running in Scotland on 4 June

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, March 05, 2015 with
I have already posted about our visit to Glasgow on 4 June.
See http://geoffmoore.blogspot.com.au/2014/07/glasgow-memories-from-4-june-this-year.html

On that day I also went on a 10k run from Larbert where we were staying. It was just along the roads, no trails off road just there. I ran as far as a freeway crossing which was a good enough place to turn back.

A beautiful day; a mild evening. There were a few people out walking, and little traffic.

speedygeese training

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, March 04, 2015 with
On Sunday at Stromlo Forest Park, while Joel, Dave and Andrew ran some 400m intervals, I jogged around, feeling relatively normal again.

On Monday at Parliament House, I jogged 5k, starting early with Miranda and Ewen, continuing later to supervise an east side 3 x 260m continuous relay which also included Alex, Andy, Cathy, Colin, Diana (new), Garry, Isaac, Jen, Julia, Margaret, Marie, Peter, Thommo, Ruth & Warrick. Yelena came along for the warmup, and Joel was there too, with 10 month old Vianna. Finally, Christopher was sighted as well, arriving as we left.

Joshua Torley, 15 years old

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, March 01, 2015 with
For anyone who hasn't seen the video of Canberra's Joshua Torley running second in the 2015 NSW 5000m track championships at the age of 15, here it is, in full.

From http://youtu.be/X8VXRAsMqNU

In the past, runners may have looked at this young fresh-faced kid on the start line of races and wondered, who is this kid, he's out of his depth. Not any more I imagine.
