Cookie blitzing Queanbeyan parkrun

Posted by speedygeoff on Saturday, June 10, 2017 with
Today at Queanbeyan Amanda Cook was the first female to finish - again - and ran 22:03, just one second outside her best time of 22:02 which she ran a week earlier. And just two seconds behind third outright on the day. She has mightily improved, and what would she do on a good day on a fast course?

A very fit Cookie resplendent in her speedygeese top.

The Queanbeyan parkrun course has been officially rated as "challenging".

Speedygeese training summary

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, June 07, 2017 with
On Thursday 01 June at Parliament House we ran some 2 person continuous relays over 300m, then some 3 person relays over 200m. I supervised, Christopher was seen walking, running were Brendan, Colin, Craig, Dave, Giles, Isaac, Jen, Brownie, Rohan, Ruth, Sandeep, and Sarah.

Sunday 04 June the speedygeese long run saw a turnout of 10 fine athletes. It was designed by Giles and covered Little Black Mountain and Mount Painter (hillier than usual). Jen provided navigation assistance. It’s probably getting a bit monotonous to talk about getting lost, so let’s just say we needed directions before we reached the 1k mark (see photo) and split into two groups before meeting up a couple of kms later. Sandeep, Bron and Sarah (with a sore ankle) did the short course (Little Black Mountain - around 11km). Susan added a few kms to finish with around 15. Jen, Nigel and Thach (new recruit) did about 18k while Giles and Dave did some extra kms at the end to total 21.1k (and 620m of elevation). Apart from Sarah’s ankle there were no injuries. This week’s shenanigans were limited to a few chin-ups on the Mount Painter trig.

Directions please?

Monday 05 June at Parliament House, running 200s 300s and 400s were Colin, Isaac, Jen, Peter, Pieta, Warrick, Tori and Kylie (new). Dave jogged around at a slow marathon pace, I jogged around supervising even walking a bit, and Christopher was again seen walking.

Speedygeese training summary

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 with
On Thursday 25 May at Parliament House, present were Dave, me, Isaac, Jen, Jennie, Nicole, Brownie, Rohan. The training session on a still and cold evening consisted of repetitions under lights – 4 x {400m (200 jog) + 200m} on 7 minutes.

Sunday 28 May at Stromlo Forest Park Andrew and I jogged around, both a little sore from racing.

Monday 29 May at Parliament House Ruth brought champagne, Christopher was walking, I was jogging. Running creative sets of 200s/400s were Isaac, Jen, Pieta and Ruth. As I recall one of the sets was first runner to 400m turns and keeps running hard until meets second runner who turns, they run together as second runner runs hard; etc until all runners come in together back at the start point. This will be interesting to watch when we get a few more runners.

Speedygeese training summary (two weeks)

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 with
On Thursday 11 May at Parliament House: Present were Colin, Dave, me, Giles, Jen, Jennie, Julia (new), Lisa, Nicole, Brownie, Pieta, Rohan and Sandeep. We ran lightpole sprints "2(2), 2(1), 3(2)".

On Saturday 13 May by Dave: "with some of us doing the Mothers Day Classic and others tied up on Sunday, Jen (19k), Sandeep (18k), Giles (16k), Susan (14k), and Warrick (14k) snuck in an unscheduled group run around Mount Ainslie ("Bush Capital" course). There were rumours that Jen got lost and Giles did a swan dive, but they turned out to be hearsay only, suspected to have originated from our Speedygeese misinformation (alternative facts) officer (guess who... and, no, it's not me). Jen was wondering if it was a coincidence that for once they didn't get lost on the one day I did not attend - of course it was a coincidence - what are you implying Jen? Even though there were no major incidents, it was reported by one of those in the field that "a couple of bearded hipsters on their fixed gear bikes heading for a morning kale shake in Braddon were spotted however". Thanks for being on the lookout Sandeep (and for the pics)."

Sunday 14 May at Stromlo Forest Park Sandeep and I ran, as I recall. I am a bit hazy, it was so long ago and a lot of water has flown under the bridge since then.

Monday 15 May at Parliament House I was on holidays and in attendance were Colin, Dave C, Giles, Jen, Jennie, Pieta and Sandeep. All completed the hill session, 20 reps on 90.

Thursday 18 May at Parliament House: Brendan, Colin, Giles, Isaac, Jen and Brownie all completed the scheduled session. Dave turned up late (even later than Jen!) but did the session (slowly). It was another variation on lightpole sprints. 2(2), 2(2), 1(1) + 2(2) + 3(3)
(i.e. for the third set sprint 1 jog 1 sprint 2 jog 2 sprint 3 jog 3 and repeat starting again at 1...)

Sunday 21 May at Stromlo Forest Park: Running on the grass were Andrew, Thomas, Jessica, Warrick and I.

Sunday 21 May was also the long run at the Cotter: Dave again "Today’s Speedygeese long run could only be described as completely different from every other run we’ve done so far. Jen, Sarah, Sandeep and I did a 23k at the Cotter (460m elevation, average pace 5.23 per km). Best scenery yet, most hills, deepest (and coldest) river crossing, greatest number of pics (over 100 all up, which probably explains why our 2 hour run took 3 hours), most surprised onlooker (probably more fun watching us than fishing), most interesting poses and props and backdrops, coldest start, most fog, and best fun. And the run was good too! I don’t know what else to say except I’m glad I was there. Also found out that “The Farmer’s Daughter” at Yarralumla makes the best omelettes in Canberra (and pretty good coffee). Thanks for the run – that would definitely qualify as a “fun run”."

Monday 24 May at Parliament House, still not enough attending for us to run relays so we ran more hills. 16 reps today. Present were Colin, Jen, Jennie (part), Peter Burke, Sandeep (part) and Susan, with me supervising after a hard day at the gym. Christopher was also seen at one late stage.

Meanwhile elsewhere in the world...

Dave B and Ruth.

For interest part of an email I received today from a Vets committee person (presumably unofficially): "Another query brought to my attention is your training group is on the Thursday track and field night is this an oversight is it possible to change nights." Part of my answer: "As far as Thursday training is concerned I don't advertise it for Vets and it takes no one away from track." Would anyone like to comment? I am certain I know who the complainant was and I had already talked to him about it.

weekly speedygeese training summary

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 with
On Thursday 4 May at Parliament House: present were Colin, me, Giles, Jennie, Jennifer (visitor), Brownie, Rohan and Sandeep. We repeated Monday night's session of 12 x 40 seconds on 2 minutes, with an extra minute’s break after 4 and 8, alternating direction from the middle of the west side straight; except the 12th which was for 69 seconds after a short break too. That’s because I turned 69 that day.

Sunday 7 May at Stromlo Forest Park Andrew, Sandeep and I ran on the grass there. Meanwhile as reported by Dave "the morning’s speedygeese long run from the Arboretum to the river and back was 'interesting, to say the least', as one person put it. It was either chaos or an adventure, depending how you look at it. It all started when we missed a turn, then got bridges confused, then couldn’t find the bridge that wasn’t, then thought we were where we weren’t so missed the turn back to the Arboretum. Even having the course on Narelle's Garmin didn't help. Graeme got the course almost perfectly but, unfortunately for the rest of us, he was going in the opposite direction. He ended up with 25k. Warrick was smart enough to do a 13k out and back so missed all the “fun”. In the end the 14k short course ended up being 19k, at which point Nigel decided he had done enough and did some sunning at the carpark. From there everyone seemed to do their own thing while I ran around looking for people. Nevertheless, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, no one tripped over (unusually) and we discovered a new trail, where we caught up with Maria and her friend. Susan and Sarah had to run off to eating events, so they jogged down the hill to the lake to end up with around 20k. Bron was so excited about doing the extra 5k in the “short” course she did 2k more to finish the half marathon distance. Narelle decided to do a few extra to make her 28-30k into 32 and I finished up with 26k, which was enough to round the week up to 70k. Graeme, Narelle, Nigel and I regrouped at the arbo café for coffee and muffins. Thanks everyone for a fun morning. Sorry I didn't get pics of everyone."

Monday 8 May at Parliament House I ran early, then Andy, Colin, Isaac, Jen, Jenni, Mick, Pieta, Sandeep, Susan and Vanessa ran 16 x 100m on 90, 2nd eastern hill, while I supervised and Christopher was seen walking. Afterwards there was a farewell for Andy, attended by Dave, Ewen, me, Jenni, George, Mick, Sandeep, Susan and of course Andy himself.

ten mile attempt

Posted by speedygeoff on Saturday, May 06, 2017 with
I set out for an "easy" 10 mile run this morning, the YCRC West Basin one. Planning on running 5:30s and breaking 90, I nearly broke 80. The first km was the slowest - 5:30 - and after that I averaged 5s. I am trending faster if you look at the last four attempts at this 10 mile event. Although of course I am now much slower than I was decades ago.

Before the start:

Sandeep's photo of me before the start.

It was cold - a longer warmup would have been good. And it poured with rain at one stage (around Scrivener) during the run.
I caught Sandeep at about 7k and ran with him for a few kilometres, then kept him in sight. I am please to report he broke the 80 minute barrier.
Experiment successful - the feet and legs are fine.

3.     Volunteers needed for the YMCA Half Marathon- Weekend 27/28th May 2017
There has been a great response to the call for volunteers for the club’s biggest event of the year, thank you to all those people. More helpers are still needed.
  • We particularly need several more helpers for the Saturday afternoon races - you would be helping with various things from 1pm for a couple of hours. If you’re running on the Sunday, please consider volunteering for this.
  • Quite a few more marshals are needed for Sunday morning. Please consider whether you could help, or enlist a family member or friend. You just have to stand in the sunshine (or bring a chair) and direct and encourage runners. It’s fun!
  • A couple more pacers would be great to have for the Sunday:
    • Either 1 hour 45 mins or 1 hour 50 mins, and 2 hours 30 mins. This is ideal for experienced runners who are recovering or don’t want to race, but would like to get out there with free entry.
The volunteer co-ordinator is TTS runner Kat Knope, please respond directly kat.knope@gmail.com

4.      YMCA Canberra Half Marathon – Saturday/Sunday 27/28th May.
The half marathon will be held on Sunday 28th May commencing at 8am from Lennox Gardens.  Entries are now open and the link is https://www.registernow.com.au/secure/Register.aspx?E=23770    The YMCA Canberra Half Marathon Earlybird entries close this Sunday 7th May at 5pm.  Save yourself money and sign up now.  The name of all Earlybird entries will be printed on their chest bib.
On the Saturday we will have a 1.6k Mini Jog for young children and a 5k Fun Run.   Entries for the 5k and Mini Jog are free for club members who will need to check in.  One day rego will be taken on the day (Saturday afternoon 27th May).  One day registrations are $10 and $5 for children. Please note all finishers in the Mini Jog will receive a medal.
As you are probably aware, we are having some issues with promotion for the Half Marathon, mainly due to not being able to update the website. However, we do have a Facebook event page at https://www.facebook.com/YMCA-of-Canberra-Half-Marathon-2017-984187288391032/.
No Half Marathon entries are taken on Race Day Sunday 28th May.  Race bibs will be available for pick up on Saturday 27th between 1pm and 3pm and before the half on Sunday morning.

5.      Winter Series Information/Volunteers.    The club commenced a Winter Series of events on the 29th April and the series finishes on 16th September.  There are no events on some weekends so as not to clash with large local events such as ‘Mother’s Day Classic’    Winter Series events are normally held on Saturday afternoons starting with a 2k event at 1245pm followed by a longer event/events at 1pm.  The locations of the events change weekly and will be published in this newsletter.  Along with the location changes so do the surfaces that we run on from on road (normally bike paths) to off road mainly bush tracks.  Long events such as this weekend’s Kingston Physio 10 Miler start at different times. The clubs ‘Calendar of Events’ which is available from ‘The Runners Shop Canberra’ and Kingston Sports Physio.  Details on club events are available on the club webpage and YMCA ActiveY @ http://canberra.ymca.org.au/what-we-do/activey/runnersclub/ and activey.canberra@ymca.org.au
Club events are conducted by volunteers, and volunteers are needed each weekend to setup and manage our events.  No experience is necessary as we walk all new helpers through the tasks. If you can help please contact Dave Osmond our volunteers coordinator @davo.osmond@gmail.com
Finally club events are for runners and joggers of all standards and the first event 2k each Saturday is a great way for friends to come along and start an exercise program of walking and jogging.   Similarly the Jogalong on the first Sunday of each month is a great way for women and girls to get into jogging and running.

Speedygeese training summary

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, May 03, 2017 with
On Thursday 27 April at Parliament House: Sandeep and I ran a solid 8k early, then I supervised a session of {200, 300, 400, 300} jogging back each time and repeated indefinitely, all under west side lights. Running were Giles, Isaac, Jen, Jennie, Lisa (new), Brownie, Sandeep & Sarah. Beanies and gloves will be compulsory soon.
This Thursday I will be bringing appropriate liquid refreshment to celebrate my birthday after training.

Sunday 30 April at Stromlo Forest Park: Andrew and I ran 10k on the grass.

Sunday 30 April at O’Connor Ridge/Little Black Mountain [Dave’s writeup] A smaller (but not quite “intimate”) group of speedygeese for the weekly long run, with some runners at the monthly Vets Handicap (watching Ruth do her 150th handicap – seems to be a weekly thing now for Ruth to reach some milestone). Narelle and I started half an hour early and did a 6k warmup (supposed to be 5k but I got lost as usual). Seven of us kicked off at 8am. Jen had the map on her new wizz bang Fenix 5 Garmin watch – only problem is she must have had it on upside down because she took us the wrong way at the start so we did a 200m loop. Unfortunately that wasn’t the only time. Finally I’ve found a worse navigator than me. Actually it was, admittedly, a useful piece of technology given the number of forks and intersections on Little Black Mountain and O’Connor Ridge. Ewen set a cracking pace at the start, with me pulling up the rear after yesterday’s Queanbeyan parkrun (at least, that’s my excuse), then we swapped roles around 15k once I’d warmed up. Warrick did an out and back 10k, with a tumble on the way back. Jen, Ewen, Susan and Sandeep completed 16k, while I knocked out 23 and Narelle did a few extra to finish up with 26. Ewen had a fight with a rock and ended up inspecting wombat holes. He enjoyed it so much he had another go and took on a tree root, with the same outcome. Luckily no blood. Tried to get him to do it again for the camera, but no such luck. Carolyne and Richard met us for coffee at “2 before 10”. Ewen and Sandeep couldn’t resist the breakfast of champions. Thanks for the run and chat everyone.

Monday 1 May at Parliament House Ewen and I ran early; the main sessions consisted of 12 x 40 second sprints on 2 minutes. Participating were Colin, Dave, Ewen, me, Isaac, Jen, Jennie, Mick, Pieta and Sandeep. Afterward Dave shared a drink with us to celebrate his 59th birthday.
Next Monday I am inviting anyone who wishes to join us at the Yacht Club to can do so at 7:00pm after training to farewell Andy. Bistro meals are available and I will be handing out Caramello Koalas to a deserving few.

Mick and Ruth: medallists at Mt Majura. I didn't truncate the photo; someone else did that.

Great song - maybe not the "official" video though.
