Easter - run when you can
Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, March 30, 2018 with
This week’s speedygeese training sessions
Sunday 25 March long run report [Dave]: Today’s run, courtesy of Jen, was a 25k loop with 570m elevation at The Cotter. The short course was 13k with 400m elevation. This was our second long run at Cotter, and arguably the most picturesque run to date. The only problem is it also offers multiple opportunities for getting lost with no phone service to check your map or let people know where you are. 😂
Welcome to those who joined us today, Candy, Shareen and Bianca.
The long runners were Kerron, Sue, Ruth, Bianca, Shiree, Shareen, Mike, Shuji, Jen Bl, Jen Br, Thach, Giles, Narelle, Graeme, Candy and Jinny. Those who did the short run were Kelley, Mick, Dave B, Pete B, Mhairi, Tori, Bron, Lisa and me. There were reported sightings of Helen, but they turned out to be hallucinations. 😯
Apart from Mike sending a text (“where are you guys?”) and Mick taking a trusted alternate detour (apparently Mick is an expert on The Cotter – but unfortunately a few things have changed in the last 50 years), nobody got lost. Three of us unwittingly followed Mick, but it was worth it to hear him copping it from Kelley for the rest of the run. There was a rumour that I took a wrong turn, but with Mick being the only witness it is unsubstantiated (although I must admit I did drive straight past the carpark and was consequently late to start).
If you noticed that Giles is wearing a tutu, it's because he is practising for the Canberra Marathon where he will wear it to help raise funds for Diabetes.
Ewen, who is out of action at the moment, joined us for coffee afterwards at The Meating Room, as did The Great Appleby (Steve Appleby) or “Apples” as Ruth calls him.
Thanks for the run everyone. I won’t be there next weekend but have fun. 🤓
Monday 26 March at Parliament House: The “Rose Garden 200” path was partially blocked, so instead of our planned training we ran continuous short distance relays, 3 person for ~18 mins, and 2 person for ~10 mins. Present were Bron, Dom, Jen, Isaac, Dave (new), Kelley, Ruth, Lisa, Craig, Tori, Giles, Pieta, Gary, Joel, David (Clarke), Jennie for the warmup, me supervising, and Christopher appearing at the end (still without champagne).
Thursday 29 March, our final session for the time being at Stromlo Forest Park: Jen and Isaac were there, Colin too, Janine, and Brownie. The usual 2.5k warm-up and 2.5k cool-down, with the small matter of 6x500m hill loops in between. I jogged 5k before that, supervised, and took an early mark, missing the cool-down owing to fatigue and/or old age. I will try and get whatever running I can in the next few days, otherwise walking.
I am looking forward to a return to Parliament House on Thursdays in April - September, in addition to the year-round Monday sessions there.

There is a bit of a break in our Club events over the next month, while the focus shifts to the Australian Running Festival on 14 and 15 April. Many Club members are participating in events over the weekend and of course a number of you have already volunteered to help out in some capacity. However we are still short a few volunteers and one pacer.
Due to an injury withdrawal we need a lead cyclist for the half marathon on Sunday. We are also looking for a couple more people to assist on the start line on Saturday, as well as course marshals on Sunday. If you, a friend or a family member can help out please let Paul Mahoney (wphe625@hotmail.com) know as soon as possible. We need to make sure all these positions are filled and all the paperwork completed well before the events.
We also are looking for an 80 minute pacer for the ARF 10 km Fun Run. You get free entry in return for running a suitable pace to help others meet their target time. Contact Paul Trumble via trumblep@hotmail.com if you can help with this.
Of course the Women and Girls’ Jogalong will continue on Sunday at 9.00am. Don’t forget that you get an extra hour on Saturday night so this will be a real sleep in! If you have friends and family visiting over Easter feel free to bring them along – entry is $10 for adults and $5 for under 18s for non-members. A reminder that while dads are welcome to run with their kids, men are not permitted to enter the 3km or 6 km events. Also we don’t allow dogs to accompany their owners in any Club races.
Our Summer Series finished up at a crowded Stromlo Forest Park on 20 March. In a close contest Adrian Kennett managed to hold off Rory O’Sullivan, Peter James and a fast-finishing Simeon Hearnshaw in the men’s series trophy. Annie Schofield was the clear winner in the women’s series, from former winner Louise Sharpe and Sarah Pau. William Bardsley picked up the barrel draw for the juniors, and Terry Levings was the winner of the volunteers’ barrel draw.
The Winter Series commences with the Kingston Physio West Basin 10 mile (16 km) event at 7.30 am on Saturday 28 April. This is a great lead up race for those aiming for the YMCA Canberra Half Marathon on 27 May. Winter Series races are free to Club members, while entry for the Half Marathon is $20 cheaper for Club members. Sign up for the Half Marathon at https://www.registernow.com.au/secure/Register.aspx?E=28434.
There is currently a problem accessing Club results through our web page, which we are working to resolve. You can access results directly at http://www.canberrarunner.com.au/index.php?module=Results&action=Results.ListView
And lastly, a reminder that TTS is actually running on Friday this weekend because of Easter. Meet at 7.00 am at the Anzac Park East car park for a run around East Basin, with the option of coffee and/or breakfast afterwards – a great way to start the long weekend.
Upcoming events
9.00 am Sunday 1 April – Jogalong 1.6/3/6km at Weston Park
Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 April – Australian Running Festival
7.30 am Saturday 28 April – Kingston Physio West Basin 10 mile at Black Mountain Peninsula
12.45 pm Saturday 5 May – North Lyneham 2/3.1/6.2 km at Salkaukus Cr, North Lyneham
9.00 am Sunday 6 May – Jogalong 1.6/3/6km at Weston Park

This week’s speedygeese training sessions
Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, March 23, 2018 with
Sunday 18 March long run report [Jen]: On the official speedygeese long run today we ran the bush capital half marathon course at Ainslie.
We started from Edgar's at Ainslie Shops instead of the War Memorial, so that the run ended at a cafe that could meet our high standards (on the coffee front). Ewen and Dave were absent today so the distance from the nearest McDonalds did not need to be considered.
Fifteen of us set off on a pretty much perfect morning - a sunny and still morning.
Perfect contrast to the strong winds that came in the afternoon.
Welcome to new comer Vanessa H! (surprise guest star) who joined us for the first time with her trusty companion Eric.
Also welcome back Sarah Johnson!!! Who has informed me she will be living back in Canberra for another 6 months very soon.
Now for the stats:
Giles ran 28k (which included his run to and from home)
Narelle ran 22k
21k: Graeme, William and Jen
20k: Sandeep, James
15k: Isaac and I (well 14.95 to be precise).
I was staying with him after losing him recently on a run! - he was very relaxed about being lost...I almost had a melt down!
12k:Sarah, Dave, Ruth, Bron (another rebellious 11.95k), Paul and Vanessa (and her very good looking companion Eric)
Helen was NOT at the run - nor was she at the coffee catch up at the end. No note was provided regarding her absence!
By joining forces and looking out for each other we managed to cross over a little water crossing with no muddied shoes - god forbid we get our trail runners dirty!
Thanks front runners for putting out a little log for us to straddle the crossing - well the smart ones did utilize it - well me to be specific ;)
And Isaac left out arrows made from sticks for the back runners to follow. As a result NO ONE got lost - probably helped that David Clarke was interstate and not there to confidently lead anyone astray!
That’s all for this weekend - See you all at the Cotter next weekend. 😀
Monday 19 March at Parliament House: A session of laps of the Rose Garden.
Starting on 2:30 and running 12 reps were Colin, Jen, Isaac, Giles, Sandeep until he dropped back a group, Dave until he swung off for a longer jog.
Starting on 2:45 and running 11 reps were Kelley, Pieta, Warrick. And Craig, arriving late.
Starting on 3:00 and running 10 laps were Jennie, Ruth, Tori, Alex, Mick H.
Thomas ran a few laps …
Brownie jogged around…
Christopher walked nearby..
Jessica honed her photography skills..
I watched and timed.
Afterwards we had fish and chips at Snapper ….. Jen, Isaac, Dave, Sandeep, Jennie, George, Rae, Vanessa, Warrick, Jessica, Thomas, Ruth, Caroline, me, and Brownie. Christopher came and went as he often does, nobody knows where. (Drain the lake!!)
Thursday 22 March at Stromlo Forest Park I trotted around the course early; then watched with Laura and Daniel the session of 3x1k, attended by Jacob, Colin, Janene, Brendan, Jen and Isaac. Thach and Ryan also joined us for the warmup, as is their custom.
Only one more Thursday at Stromlo, then we head back to Parliament House.

This week’s speedygeese training sessions
Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, March 16, 2018 with
Sunday 11 March long run report [Dave]: It was a busy long weekend for speedygeese runners. Saturday saw some great runs at 6 Foot Track (about 1,500m elevation over 45k) and the Australian Alpine Ascent (about 800m elevation over 25k). Sunday was the Weston Creek half marathon and Maloolabar triathlon. Monday was the Sri Chinmoy 4k and 10k.
In 6 Foot Track Martin smashed out a 4:34, Shuji finished in 5:01:41 and Mike got 5:51:42. Fantastic efforts on a gruelling course. 😯
In the AAA Monika was 2nd female in 2:25:08 and Narelle was 5th female in 2:43:51, while Graeme finished in 3:13:28. Well done guys. 😯
In the half marathon Giles did a respectable 1:36:20, Thommo 1:39:46, Roger did 2:03:36 and Ruth was close behind with 2:07:03. Afterwards Ruth, Margaret, Roger, Ewen and I had coffee at the Botanical Gardens café. Without planning it, we all came up with creative ways to save the $2 parking fee. Ewen rode his bike from Calwell (63k round trip), Roger parked on the road and walked up black mountain to the café, and I parked in the carpark and didn’t bother paying (as usual). Ruth gets the prize for getting a lift with someone who has a disabled sticker. 😂 🤣
Also on Sunday, Dave B knocked over the triathlon in 2:42:00, with 49:19 for the 10k run section.
Meanwhile, on the official speedygeese long run, Mhairi, Jen, Helen, Sue, Tim, Helen, Adrian, Jen B, Shane, Kelley, Helen, Mick and Shiree ran or hiked up Mount Tennent. And Helen was there too. Most finished with 20k. Adrian and Shiree did a bit extra, ending with 24k. There was one fall (Sue, who is apparently okay) and reportedly no one got lost.
On Monday in the Sri Chinmoy 10k, Kelley was first female 50-59 (great backup after yesterday’s Mt Tennent) and I managed 1st male 50-59 in 41:27. John finished the 10k in 1:08:25. Mick and Craig W also ran the 10k. Kim C is having a great comeback with 2nd female overall in the 4k.
That’s all for this weekend - let’s do it all again next weekend (well maybe not quite all of it). 😀 😯
Monday 12 March at Parliament House: A session of laps of the Rose Garden: starting on 2:30 and running 12 reps were Jen, Isaac and Giles. Starting on 2:45 and running 11 reps were Bron, Sandeep, Jinnie and Tori; starting on 3:00 and running 10 laps were Ruth and Bill. I watched the timer, and Christopher did his fast walking.
Thursday 15 March at Stromlo Forest Park I watched while Jen, Isaac, Jennie and Colin ran 7 x 200 with 100 jog, then 12 x 50 with 50 recovery. The speedygosling group seems no more, and daylight saving ending 1 April means only two more Thursdays at Stromlo before they lock the gate early.

56 years running
Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, March 15, 2018 with
56 years ago I "threw away my tennis racket and started running". (From my 1962 diary)
In 1962-1965 I was a member of the ABHS Athletic club.
In 1966 a member of Adelaide University Athletic club.
In 1967-1968 a member of the Flinders University Athletic club, of which I was inaugural Secretary.
From 1969 a member of North Canberra Athletic club. To present day, as I am a life member.
Running highlights worth mentioning:
In May 1965 winner of the SA Schools one mile track championships, 4:32.2, just before my 17th birthday.
In July 1978 seventh in the National Marathon in 2:30.05 in “steam-bath” conditions, Caboolture, Queensland.
In November 1978 winner of the Canberra Marathon, 2:26.58, a new ACT open record at the time.
In 1979 ACT Distance Runner of the year.
In January 1984 3000m in 8:47.3, an AMA M35 Australian record which stood until 2015.
Being not currently injury free, I do not know what tomorrow will bring.
"Now enjoying my running".

This week’s speedygeese training sessions

Sunday 04 March long run report [Dave]: Well, after last week’s debacle (almost everybody going different ways at various points and some having to sprint to get back in time for Coombs parkrun trial), it was unanimously agreed to follow Sandeep’s suggestion and redo last week’s run. I’m pleased to report that almost everyone stuck to the right course this time.
Interestingly, the distances covered ranged from 7k to 30k, with average pace ranging from 5.05 to 6.56 per km. For those of us used to shorter, slower long runs, it was a full day recovery (including two nanna naps for me). 🤣 27 runners started, possibly a record turnout, including Thach, Giles, Paul, Jen, Ewen, Thommo, Kelley, William, Browny, John, Sandeep, Narelle, Graeme, Cameron, James, Warrick, Jen, Jennie B, the other Jennie, Sue, Kerron and me. Oh, and Helen said she ran but it’s not on Strava so it’s just heresay. Sorry to those I missed. [Edit: Mick, Tori]
The course took us on a 7k loop from the start of Coombs parkrun over the river, through a pleasant windy single trail, under the Parkway and down River Rd back to the start. Stage 2 of the Tour de Ewen (Ewen designed the original course for last week) was a lap of Coombs parkrun, then Stage 3 went over the river, along pipe flat, up to the arboretum then back along River Rd to the start. All up a very pleasant course in perfect weather.
The usual post run coffee was held at The Meeting Room at Weston Creek.
Next week is Mt Tennent (for those keen on running mountains). See you then. 🤓
Monday 05 March at Parliament House: Laps of the Rose Garden 450m loop were run: Bernado (15 completed laps and most of a 16th lap), Colin (15), Jen (14), Isaac (13), Craig (12), Kelley (12), Bron (11), Pieta (11), Sandeep (11), Warrick (11), Mick H (11), Ewen (11), Dom (10), Jennie (10), Lisa (10), Ruth (9), Miranda (8), Thomas (5) and Jessica did her own thing including waterbombing her brother, and I watched.
Thursday 08 March at Stromlo Forest Park I jogged 5k (without the permission of my Physio, which was a mistake), Thach and Ryan cycled then joined us for our warm-up, and Jennie, Janene, Tori and Sandeep ran a repeat of last week’s session, as they were not present then, 10 by 200 quick, 100 easy on the 1k circuit. None of last week's participants turned up so I have save my planned session for another week.

This week's speedygeese training sessions

Sunday 25 February long run report [Dave]: With rain forecast, today’s speedygeese long run was always going to be interesting – but nobody could have forecast some of today’s highlights. Ewen had designed a scenic route taking in the river and the Arboretum, incorporating Coombs trial parkrun. Today’s contenders were Susan, Sandeep, Shane and Scully, Brownie, Paul, Jen, Thach, Matthew, James, Ewen, William, me and first timer Cameron (welcome Cameron).
With slight drizzle, the lead group set a good pace, with the second group not too far behind and me in the rear. Within 3 minutes the small group of geese became two – let’s say Jen’s lead group and Ewen’s group. Jen’s group missed the turnoff. By the time they got back Ewen’s group was long gone, with only Brownie and I waiting feeling sorry for them (well, actually, I was just waiting to get some photos). 😂 It was a perfect opportunity to get a couple of nice pics – one with Brownie waving and whistling to the Dots on the hill in the distance and one with Jen’s group arriving at the bridge, with Scully in the lead, tongue hanging out.
After that initial confusion everything went smoothly…until Jen’s group got lost again, going clockwise on the arbo loop instead of anticlockwise (another of my favourite pics with Jen and Thach trying to figure out where they went wrong). Probably didn’t help that Jen had not looked at the course. It seems that there are some loyal fans who still follow her anywhere. Jen blames Thach, who apparently thought it was an out and back course. 🤣
I must say there are benefits of running at the back of the pack, including observation of all the antics. Also it was important to witness Jen’s presence now that she is not on Strava. 😮
We met up with Ewen’s group and I chose to turn and run with them, which turned out to be a smart move – apparently the other group was close to 4 minute pace trying to get back for the start of parkrun trial. Unfortunately, though, I missed out on a very nice single track that we hadn’t run before. Not sure what happened to Susan, but she disappeared somewhere along the way and was seen running the wrong way in parkrun. 😂
After 8k we joined in the trial, just as the drizzle intensified. Tim Grainger seemed to take delight in standing under his umbrella giving extended instructions while 119 people (plus Jen who forgot her barcode) shivered in the wind. I didn’t mind as it gave me just enough time to change into my go-fast shoes (which seem to knock a couple of minutes per km off my pace??). Matthew was first across the line and I was third. Jen was first female. I think we all forgot it’s a run, not a race, so the good runners were obviously jogging.
By the time we finished the parkrun trial the rain had set in and the wind had picked up so it seemed like a good time to quit and head for coffee (plus I was stuffed). Thach and Ewen had the same idea. Diehards like Jen and Giles continued on, with Giles getting another 8km in (after his 15km run from home to the start) before deciding to give in and phone a friend. Jen and Brownie turned up at coffee looking like drowned rats.
The highlight was the group hug and kisses from Giles, Vanessa and Brownie. 😝
See you next week for Sandeep’s course. 🤓
Back to my reports: Monday 26 February at Parliament House at the Rose Garden: running 15 minutes of 3 person relays then ~8 minutes of 2 person relays, all short course, were Craig, Pieta, Bernado, Mick H, Kelley, Isaac, Jen, Ruth, Jennie, Ewen, Tori, Vanessa, Warrick. Daniel ran some laps too, as did Dave, Christopher ran a few as well, and I just stood there.
Then Jen Isaac, Daniel, Ruth, Ewen and I had fish and chips for an hour or so, bought mostly from Snapper.
Thursday 1 March at Stromlo Forest Park, Thach and Ryan cycled many laps then joined us for the warmup; in the main session Colin, Jen and Isaac ran 3k around the 1k circuit alternating 200m fast/100m float; while I sat in the shade and watched. The temperature dropped by 5 degrees and a bit of a breeze sprang up, a pleasant evening for the start of Autumn.
