Bill Shorten ran 26:54 for Batemans Bay parkrun on New Years day, a time which definitely qualifies him to join us.

recent speedygeese training

Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, January 05, 2018 with
Sunday 31 December speedygeese long run report [Dave]: What a great day for the last long run of 2017. With the temperature a little below 18 degrees, no wind and slight cloud cover, a gaggle of speedygeese met at 7am at the National Rock Garden by the arboretum. There were two expertly designed courses on offer (14k and 18.7k, which turned into 20k), with some minor variations available for those who wanted to add a trip or two up Dairy Farmers Hill for some extra vert.
Apart from interruptions by Jen and Mhairi during the run briefing (Mhairi had to stand in the naughty spot so I could keep an eye on her – she was in big trouble today 😜), it was an and enjoyable run with no injuries.
Both courses followed River Road track for the first 5 km then split. The 14k was basically a loop around the arboretum while the 20k crossed over the river and headed to John Gorton Drive then crossed back over the river and followed Pipe Flat, Boundary Road and River Road back to the start. Reportedly no one got lost on the 14k.
The 20k was a different story. After finding a major fenced off area, Giles and Brownie led us down a previously unknown trail that turned out to be a very pleasant discovery. In the end we weren’t that far off course, until Thach decided to go left near Pipe Flat instead of right and we had to turn back half way to Butter’s Bridge 😱. At the fence, Ruth and Jennie decided to go their own way and weren’t seen again until coffee time. Apparently they stuck to the route closer than the rest of us.
The 20k masters were Thach, Shuji, Brownie, Giles, me, Jason, Mike, Ruth and Jennie. Those who did the 14k were Geoff, Isaac, Jen, Bronwyn, Adrian, Mhairi, Ewen and David B. Jen added several km at the end of the 14.
Coffee was enjoyed afterwards at the arboretum village. The food wasn’t the best, but the view made up for this minor shortcoming.
Well done all. See you for the first speedygeese long run for 2018 (unless I see you at the double parkrun tomorrow first). 🤓

Thursday 04 January at Stromlo Forest Park was warm to start with but felt OKish later. The session was 4 x 1 minute quick runs mostly uphill, and a series of 100m stride/jogs. While Dom raced off on his mountain bike, and Ray, Ryan, Gus and Sadie enjoyed the kiddies playground/cycle track. I joined in a bit with the training group of Bron, Sara-Jayne, Janene, Ewen, Jennie, Ruth, Isaac, Jen, Brownie, Jason and Sandeep.

recent speedygeese training

Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, December 29, 2017 with
Sunday 24 December speedygeese long run report [Giles]: "Quite a crowd this morning although only one of us actually embraced the Christmas theme... Anyway, today’s course involved some non-flat running along the Majura trails, up along the kangaroo-killing stretch of the Federal Highway (thankfully none were sleeping by the road this morning), and some brown snake hunting up Mt Majura (none were seen though- I think the gentle jingling of the Christmas bells I was wearing scared them off).
Key highlights were:
. Special guest appearance by the Captain (Geoff Moore)
. No significant wrong turns (although the captain did show some lack of a sense of direction)
. No injuries reported
. A fine fruit shake at the end
Most of us did around 10-20 k - not a bad effort when the forecast max is 36 degrees."

I ran most of the way within the vicinity of Jennie and Ruth and Bill, and in the end Giles. There were many speedier runners there.

Monday 25 December - no organised training.
(parkruns available. Same goes for New Year's Day)

Thursday 28 December at Stromlo Forest Park. Not a bad effort again, 14 of us turned out to run a warmup (2.5k); then intervals 5 x 200m (2.0k); 4 x 100m (1.0k); and a cooldown (2.5k). Running were Ewen, Janene, Bill, Giles, Jennie, Sandeep, Jen, Bronwyn, Thach, Jason, Colin, Dave, Brownie, me also doing the shortish session.

Majura Trail training run

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, December 24, 2017 with
This morning's trail run was from Watson shops then along Majura trails to the Federal Highway, up to the top of the highway along the Centenary Trail, and return back along the trails. Quite undulating for me, but with frequent stops to recover from the uphills.

Here are a couple I managed to keep up with for the most part.

Jennie and Ruth

And here is my "re-live" video:

Starting at 7:00am instead of 8:00am made it a lot more comfortable than it could have been. And much of the run was in shade, which helped.

The race report is on Giles' FB page this time as he was the organiser this week. I will copy the report for Friday's post along with any other training summaries (i.e. next Thursday's).

I plan to do my fourth Sunday morning trail run in a row on the 31st; said to be at the arboretum. Or I could meet them there and jog gently around West Basin, thus avoiding the arboretum cliffs.

recent training

Sunday 17 December speedygeese long run report [Dave]:
A huge Speedygeese turnout this morning for the world famous Tour De Ridges runs (21.2 k, 15.3k and 10.6k). With slightly warm and humid conditions, and over 600m elevation in the half marathon, it was always going to be a tough run, even for those not racing.
In the half marathon Narelle was 4th female and 22nd overall in 1:52:56, Adrian got 1:57:07, Giles 1:58:20, Cookie 2:00:29 (6th female), Kelley 2:09:52, Markus 2:14:32, Thommo and Pieta 2:25:11, Lisa 2:26:42 and Sandeep 2:44:05.
Jen and I jogged the half as a training run, with various stops along the way for selfies and chin-ups at Trigs. 😂 Jen ended up with 2:09:19 and I did 2:10:31.
In the 15.3k Mhairi got 1:27:53 (7th female), Graeme 1:31:00, Marcus 1:31:38, Jason 1:34:54, Kerron 1:44:53 and Bron 1:45:19.
In the 10.6k Jacob was first in 41:20, Isaac was jogging and got 12th in 57.01, Ewen 57.09, Geoff (our fearless leader) 1:05:52, Ruth 1:09:55, and Carolyne 1:19:12.
Meanwhile Shiree, Thach, Bronwyn, Mike and Shuji did a 20k long training run at the Urambi Hill / Mt Arawang loop. Reportedly no one got lost.
Great running everyone. Next week’s run starts at an earlier time of 7am. See you there. 🤓

Monday 18 December the speedygeese met at Parliament House for the last time until 8th January. We ran Rose Garden 200s, fewer and with a longer interval than usual because of the heat. I supervised (and ran one interval as I felt OK) while Ewen ran early as well as running all the reps, plus Nadine, Bronwyn, Christopher, Jen, Sandeep, Brownie, Ruth, Jennie, Rae, Vanessa and Giles taking part. Ten intervals were enough for those who usually do 12, and 8 for those usually running 10.

There will be no Parliament House training on 25/12 (Merry Christmas!) nor on 01/01 (Happy New year! Run a parkrun instead – Gungahlin parkun on Christmas Day, and both Tuggerarong (7:30am) and Gungahlin (9:30am) on New Year’s Day. The speedygeese will resume at Parliament House on 8th January.

Thursday 21 December: our very first Thursday training at Stromlo Forest Park. 17 of us met there, along with several other training groups and hordes of cyclists. After a warmup large lap, we enjoyed four hard 500m at the northern hill, then a couple of strides along the 200m straight. It was warm to start with but cooled down a little towards the end when an easterly blew in. Participating were Thach with Ryan and Emily, Jen, Isaac, Pieta, Tori, Janene, Sandeep, Bron, Brownie, Andrew, Ruth, Jennie, Bronwyn, me, and a late Dave.
