ouch .... headache

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 with
I don't know if it is a stress headache, a flu headache, a change in the weather headache, a dehydration headache, a sleep deprivation headache, a too much time on the laptop headache, something else, or all of the above. But it is a headache and I am even busier than usual at present.
And I don't know about anyone else, but when I resort to a pain killer, even just one, I have a rest from running and only jog if I have to, i.e. when coaching. My choice, I am not going to risk getting dependent on such things and I am not going to risk burning out. There is no finish line!

Cluttered. Definitely.

Pre
Yesterday I watched a great movie, "Without Limits", about Prefontaine's short running career. Recommended. Very inspiring, thought provoking, and some great quotes. Obviously true to life, made by people who know all about runners and coaches, the very different personalities, the incredibly emotional roller coaster journey they travel. The subplots, e.g. the last days of amateurism, and the NIKE running shoe revolution for example, all very interesting. Thanks Andy for the loan of the DVD.

She blew them away after 3k
Running and winning her first Fun Run, Cookie today averaged 4:48k for a 5.5k course at the Acton Ferry Terminal this morning, a quantum improvement in pace from previous races. It was the ATO sports carnival's 6k "Fun Run", albeit with some serious runners. A comfortable 5th or 6th at 1k, up on the shoulders of the leader at 2k, Cookie was the only one to maintain the effort in the 2nd half of the race and blew her opposition away. A great day for athlete and coach!

After the run

YCRC Summer Series 2013
Lake Ginninderra Tuesday 26 Feb - 6.15pm - 2k/5k MacDermott Place, Lake Ginninderra Belconnen. The start/finish can be reached by driving along any of the three main roads from the City to Belconnen. MacDermott Place is located off Joynton Smith Drive, which in turn is off Coulter Drive. Any of Ginninderra Drive, Belconnen Way and William Hovell Drive will take you to Coulter Drive.

Acton Ferry Terminal - Tuesday 5 March - Start/Finish location changed. The start/finish for this event has been changed to the bike path near the car park at the National Museum, on Acton Peninsula. Work at the National Museum has caused the closure of a bike path in the area we did use, The new start/finish can be reached by travelling along Lawson Crescent or Lennox Crossing to the AIATSIS or National Museum Of Australia Car Park. Alternatively you can run from the old start at Acton Ferry Terminal approximately 1.3k to this area. The start/finish line is at the Jetty on the lake edge.

BBQ Stakes 6k 20 February
I finally got back a Stakes run after missing all of 2012. Trying to average 5 minute kilometres I was 40 seconds behind schedule up the hills by 2k, but managed to get back on track at the end. It wasn't easy and the hills seemed twice as long as before. Thursday will be a rest day after six pretty hard days in a row, I won't be tempted to get onto the unforgiving track at Bruce for a while yet.
If I go and run the Stakes, it does mean I can list our results once again.

Speedygeese at the Stakes:
Jen Bright 26:57
Helen Larmour 28:00
Andy Matthews 29:18
Geoff Moore 30:04
Gary Bowen 31:17
Caroline Campbell 39:31

Flipping the Switch (to decent training)

Posted by speedygeoff on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 with
I ran a fairly solid 83k last week, and running is feeling easier. I may run as much again this week, or not, but I am enjoying the feeling of actually getting faster for short runs, and surprisingly for long runs as well.

Monday training
Turning out on a warm Monday afternoon were Peter, Ewen & I running early, then running for 30 minutes around our Rose Garden loop incorporating timed 200s for those wanting speed work were Abi, Cookie, Andrew S, Andy, Bronwyn, Cathy N (back after a long break), Clint, Craig, Ewen, Garry. me, Jen, Kym, Mick, Peter, Rae, Ruth, Sarah P, Sarah-Jayne, Susan & Warrick. At a guess, most were pretty well exhausted after what turned out to be a solid session.

Weston Creek Half Marathon
One speedygeese team of three runners has been lined up to do a relay, more such relay teams welcome. Of course you can always enter as an individual and do the full event.
Date - Sunday 17 March.
Relay distances - 8k, 6k, 7k.
Cost $45 per team ($15 each) or $35 for an individual doing the 21k.
Enter on-line at https://www.registernow.com.au/secure/Register.aspx?ID=8184.
No late entry for teams.

Abi’s Alibi
She's expecting! Which is why she hasn't been flogging us at training recently.

Coming up
This Sunday we won't be at Stromlo Forest Park. For a start the national MTB championships are on and the whole area will be booked out. Secondly the Vets handicap is on and several of us will be there. Thirdly I will be at Acton Ferry Terminal watching Cookie compete in her big race. so I am advertising "Speedygeese training" at Acton Ferry Terminal at 7:30am this Sunday instead of at Stromlo. But I expect we will just jog around and enjoy the morning.

So. On with the training. We will get there.

A glimpse of the Running Festival

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, February 17, 2013 with
Marty running at Stromlo last night.

He was attempting to run a record for 100k. He was a dnf but not after a solid few hours of very fast running. Stomach problems I believe.

Training this morning at Stromlo were Andrew S, Miranda, Joel, Yelena, Cookie, Kym, Ewen & me. Plus a long running Bronwyn. We also saw hundreds of other runners, including Peter & Craig who were racing 30k in the Stromlo Running festival lightning strike race. It was my only glimpse of the running festival this year. The weather would have been ideal for the weekend activities, with no rain, and no blazing sun.

Today I ran 14k, with newcomer Kristian, from Acton Ferry Terminal as usual. I have been averaging ~6:03 per km for my long runs, today the average was 5:18! This was partly due to the cooler morning being ideal for running, but mostly due to having suddenly some gained fitness back. My next effort day will be a return to BBQ Stakes this coming Wednesday, although I am planning to trot around at the YCRC Summer Series the day before.

Australian Idle

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, February 14, 2013 with
Not

Today is not only Valentine's day, it is the tenth anniversary of my retirement from work. Paid work. I can't say I have been idle though. It would be nice to say I caught up on my reading; didn't. Or I visited the coast regularly; didn't. Or I learnt an instrument; didn't. Or I did a whole heap of cross training; didn't. Or traveled extensively; didn't. And so on. On the up side I can say I didn't start visiting the pub, or start overeating, or give up daily exercise, or get sick, or split up with anyone. And I have kept training and never given up on coaching anyone, even though many may have given up on me; their problem. And I have made many new friends, particularly those in the younger brigade.

We (speedyJenny & I) are busy tonight, as usual, but tomorrow night there will be a rare window of opportunity to celebrate, with my first glass (or two) of wine in February 2013.

Also in the last ten years this blog was born, and is working its way towards adolescence, growing a little bit each day. Despite the spell checker trying just now for the word "obsolescence" instead of "adolescence". I don't think so!

Never idle

"what a strange world we live in"

Alice In Wonderland - the book
"Well, in our country," said Alice, still panting a little, "you'd generally get to somewhere else -- if you ran very fast for a long time, as we've been doing."
"A slow sort of country!" said the Queen. "Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!"

Speaking of drugs, the brilliant Kiwi movie "Boy" is on TV tomorrow night.
It is the highest grossing NZ movie ever.
And it is poignant. But very funny too.
