Fast and Speedy Form Guide

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, November 28, 2013 with
As 2013 nears its end, it is time once again to check out the form of the speedygeese.

Abi Fargher is running at Max speed these days.
Amanda Cook is speedy towards the end of an event, provided the event in question is a triathlon.
Andrew Simpson is sporty and healthy, and not ageing.
Andy Matthews has an aspirational goal: to run as fast as Jen Bright.
Bronwyn Calver is our only Hall of Fame-er. Has many speedy runs on the scoreboard.
Caroline Campbell age and speed will not weary her. But no ageing in evidence here.
Cathy Montalto an original goose, ran with us when the whole group was even speedier.
Cathy Newman always speeds up during a run, even during the 100m.
Christopher Lang would be speedier if running were not a warm-up for singing.
Clint Zirk who? That’s right, an alien with two (possibly) hearts. Built for speed.
Colin Farlow still training fast to train fast, déjà vu.
Craig Davis local hero. Speediest member of his household.
Eliza Middleton the secret of her speed is “ants in the pants”.
Ewen Thompson [see Cathy Montalto]
Garry Maher ageing grizzled sprinter, vulnerable in the 800m.
Geoff Moore biggest goose. Nice speedy car, but.
Jen Bright surges faster than the speed of bright.
Joel Pearson New M30, very speedy when allowed out.
Kathy Sims occasional visitor, speediest W60. Once never missed a session.
Kelley Flood [see Kelley Horan]
Kelley Horan [see Kelley Flood]
Kerrie Tanner talks about joining us again. A lot.
Kylie Malone warms up faster than my sprint.
Kym Chisholm due for a few wins, if she plays her cards right.
Lucia Pietropaoli warms up faster than my jog.
Margaret McSpadden could have claimed speedygeese longevity [see Ewen Thompson] if she hadn’t confessed to being a twin. Her identical sister was indeed speedy, even when walking.
Maria O'Reilly [see Kathy Sims]
Mick Charlton was speedy once, now quite retiring.
Mick Horan Always quick to follow orders. Not that it’s me giving the orders.
Miranda Rawlinson would feel safer if she drove to training in a good fast rugged SUV.
Peter Burke want to run a speedy 5k and break 20 minutes? Tag onto Peter.
Rae Palmer potential running streaker when she turns 67 next year. I will be watching!
Rod Lynch is he still speedier than his son? If so, not for long, but well done so far.
Ruth Baussmann thinks Canberra Marathon will be quicker than a freezing New York, even with all the hills of Canberra's new course.
Sarah-Jayne Miller New W30, hills don’t slow her down. Enough.
Susan Sturgeon A speedy return to health and 2014 looks good.
Tori Hennig [see Maria O'Reilly]
Warrick Howieson can be speedy. But not at the top of a hill towards the end of the marathon.
Yelena Pearson could be back to something like Max speed [see Abi Fargher] late next year, I would be expecting.

speedygeese 2012 form guide

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 with
Speedygeese form guide.
Abi Fargher: married less than a year and hasn’t stop running!!!!
Amanda Cook: goes by an alias to confuse the punter.
Andrew Simpson: has children aged 6, 4 and 2: the sequence has stopped, he now runs.
Andy Matthews: cooks up a storm just to feed his daughter. Or so he tells us.
Bronwyn Calver: runs downhill marathons. Why didn’t we think of that, they all count.
Caroline Campbell: races daily, up mountains or in triathlons, and flogs all other W65s.
Cathy Montalto: longest running current member of the speedygeese.
Cherie Parkes: will take over the speedygeese when she grows up and the rest of us get too old.
Christopher Lang: would like to take over the speedygeese, but is older than he looks.
Colin Farlow: is training to improve his training times.
Craig Davis: does 90 minute warm-ups for his speed sessions. Beatable in his speed sessions.
Ewen Thompson: writer extraordinaire; good source of training ideas and blogging ideas.
Geoff Moore: I attend every training session, only so that I can record who attended.
Havillah Correira: proof that you can run in every corner of the globe.
Helen Larmour: the only runner in the group who can chat away during the 20th hill sprint.
Janene Kingston: multi-talented: able to care both for Vets and for animals.
Jeni Greenland: gave a talk at the last Stromlo Running Festival. Good at talking.
Jen Bright: good at talking.
Jill Pearson: mother in law of Yelena. I’m jealous.
Joel Pearson: son of mother-in-law of Yelena. I’m very jealous.
Katherine Sheppard: last seen running off into the distance when warming up for training.
Kym Chisholm: will smash 20 minutes for 5k before I do, I’d bet on it.
Lauren Johnstone: so excited at joining the speedygeese, has left the country for six months.
Lincoln Hawkins: rubs shoulders with people who rub shoulders with sport stars.
Lucia Pietropaoli: keen to break 20:40 for 5k by 2040. Her maths is a worry.
Margaret McSpadden: keeps Ruth honest when they race
Maria O'Reilly: nice car!
Mick Charlton: worried that we might soon start doing footy training every week.
Miranda Rawlinson: would like the next speedygeese dinner to be at Kiama.
Nadine Morrison: could have beaten me to a sub 20 5k if not for a strategically placed pine cone.
Neil Boden: famous for having the most talented daughter.
Roger Pilkington: it’s good to have one other Crows supporter to talk to.
Ruth Baussmann: reliable supplier of jelly beans after training sessions.
Susan Sturgeon: only runs on the track in winter at Dickson.
Suzie Gye: specialty is staying upright until a race is over.
Tim Calver: someone else has done pole to pole; Tim could be the first to run the equator.
Warrick Howieson: has children and runs. See “Andrew” above.
Yelena Pearson: pocket rocket.
Zainab Farouk: source of the next wave of new speedygeese.

Speedygeese Form Guide: December 2009 update

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, December 24, 2009 with
Amanda Walker: A four year old keeps her on her toes. Will keep improving now that she’s running on her toes.
Andrew Matthews: Runs with the Saturday group (see “Jennifer”) so is likely to run very fast in the future. Mostly on Saturdays, downhill.
Brett Morrison: Recently married (see “Nadine”) so his next life goal is to record a win over her. This will not be too difficult.
Bronwyn Calver: was rumoured to have a day off this year after a particularly torturous mountain race. I will believe it when I see it.
Caroline Campbell: has age percentages I can only dream of. Looks good to improve for the next thirty years or so.
Cathy Montalto: Still running long and fast despite distractions (see “Graeme”).
Christopher Lang: Allegedly runs on the track, but has only been seen there in suit and tie.
Craig Davis: pleasant running companion who should be the second biggest improver in 2010.
Emily McLoughlin : pleasant running companion. Who. IS. Improving. As fast as anyone...
Ewen Thompson: runs with the Saturday group (see “Andrew”) and the only time he has ever been slow was when he failed to enter the 2010 Six Foot Track in time. Will win one or two Vets handicaps instead.
Garry Maher: top sprinter, but a goose out of water when with us distance runners.
Gary Bowen: trains like there’s no tomorrow. Which there isn’t, perhaps.
Graeme Patrick: Has no choice but to keep running to keep up with certain others (see “Cathy”).
Heidi Johnston: Flogs the pants off us in training. Unbeatable.
Helen Larmour: Flogs the pants off us in training. Unbeatable.
Janene Kingston: Flogs the pants off us in training. Unbeatable. If these three were to get together and form a relay team in the next half marathon they would win easily! (Hint hint).
Jennifer Bright: Runs with the Saturday group (see “Ruth”) and has two speeds – sprint and stop.
Jodie Davis: R4YL pin-up girl.
Joel Pearson: still young, still fit, and still happy (see “Yelena”).
Kat Francis: bad luck boys, it’s too late she’s engaged.
Kathy Sims: relatively speaking the best female middle distance runner in Canberra, and continues to inspire.
Katie Forestier: in top form and improving. I have conceded that I cannot keep up with her any more. Especially when the starting gun fires.
Kelley Flood: terrible luck boys, too late, she’s engaged (see “Mick Horan”)
Ken White: still running very fast despite injury, an injury-free 2010 would see some great times.
Maria O’Reilly: still running very fast despite injury, gets the best age percentages of all, an injury-free 2010 would see some great times.
Melanie Tait: Newbie who I predict just might be the most improved in 2010.
Mick Charlton: quiet achiever, due for a couple of wins in the Vets handicap if he plays his cards right and picks his event (see “Ewen”).
Mick Horan: Luckiest boy in the training group (see “Kelley”). As a result, his brilliant form may become patchy.
Miranda Rawlinson: Likes to run when it’s not too hot. Likes to run when it’s not too cold. Biggest problem is that, in Canberra, it’s always either too hot or too cold.
Nadine Morrison: Recently married (see “Brett”) so her next life goal is to remain undefeated when she races him. This will not be too difficult.
Neil Boden: Long legs. Instant improver. Just add leg-speed.
Rachelle Ellis-Brownlee: Last year I predicted she would knock 30 seconds off her 800m time and 60 seconds off her 1500m time. I was right.
Richard Frost: newbie who will improve in 2010, and could challenge Mel and Craig and Andrew for the most improved. Not to mention Ruth. Or Emily. Or...
Ruth Baussmann: Runs with the Saturday group (see “Ewen”) and will improve. One day!
Tim Calver: He’s back! Bring on the coffee. Would be a serious challenge for Troy if they ever trained at the same time and place.
Tony Booth: the only runner (besides speedycoach) who is currently at every training sessions. And we love running around his orchard on Saturdays, much better than running up and down mountains.
Troy Steinman: Fastest runner in the group and currently running PBs. Will be the most improved in 2010 (or have I already used that line?)
Warrick Howieson: trains well but his form is unknown! He is a dark horse, then. Watch out.
Yelena Pearson: still young, still fit, and still happy (see "Joel").
Yili Xhu: hopes to get some consistent training in with us in the new year, and could improve too; actually anyone could be the biggest improver in 2010!
And me: uninjured, unfast, and unimproving, but just might find some form this year, if I keep coming to every session and keep trying to hang onto everybody else. And if I do, my plan is to become the most improved runner in the speedygeese training group. So there.

Canberra 50 year old runs 2:30 for the marathon.

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, January 04, 2009 with
Form guide part two: these are some of the speedygeese we haven't seen of late!
Adam Robinson: Trained regularly then got married. Probably in great form, but none of us will ever know!
Amalendu Edelsten: Proof that a former life as a gymnast can make you a remarkably fast and strong runner. Probably has several former lives.
Annette Sugden: once trained with us regularly (i.e. once a month) but left these shores last year for greener pastures.
Barbara Tucker: another export, to a very foreign country endeed (New Zilland)
Carol Baird: runs all day up hill, down dale, and through creeks - the last of which was her downfall.
Carol Ey: a goose before there was any thought of geese, ran the London marathon once, under 2:50, and is still running.
Carolyne Kramer: still a baby goose (sleeps like a baby) and will learn to fly before she learns to run, I imagine.
Charmaine Knobel: ran with us each week before becoming our first mole in the runners shop. ("mole": underground goose.)
Christine O’Keeffe: a.k.a. "the other Christine", should rejoin us, as she would become "the real Christine".
David Webster: thank God he doesn't train, or he'd be thrashing us all.
Jacqui Rosier: light of foot, inhabits Dickson in winter, hibernates in summer. I didn't know geese hibernated!
Jeni Greenland: has copyrighted "speedygosling" in case you didn't know. Is that fair?
Jenny Langton: Escaped to Brisvegas and sends the occasional "joke" via email to prove that, if not alive and well, at least is still breathing.
Jill Pearson: her 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 new year resolutions were to start training again. Never mind Jill: you brought Joel and Yelena to us, your job is done.
John Alcock: when did he stop training with us? I missed that. Perhaps he still tags along.
Kathy Southgate: claims to be a goose but is too good to be seen with us. Hey, does anyone think our training group could appoint a Patron?
Kevin Chamberlain: trains by correspondence, as he lives interstate. (i.e. Queanbeyan)
Lisa Wilson: part time goose who is due for a come-back. Again.
Matthew Hardy: who? Also, Sue Bourke, Michael Rutter, Kevin Matthews, and more. The only thing I remember about them is they all run very fast.
Maureen Rossiter: naturally talented runner who races occasionally and trains less often than that.
Peter Hogan: has been observed to enter races more often than social events. But only recently.
Peter McDonald: has been observed at social events.
Roger Pilkington: has been seen only at races recently. Planning to run thirty marathons this year Roger?
Trevor Cobbold: flies in for a rare speed session, flies out again sore.
Zel Bodulovic: sometimes seen fleetingly and ghost-like in the distance when we are training. Very solid for a ghost.

This from 1988: 21 years ago. Click to expand.

speedygeese form guide

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, December 28, 2008 with
Alan Duus: regular runner at Parliament House, who doubles as the handicapper for the ACTMA monthly handicap races. Try not to upset this man!
Alistair Green: when not travelling to compete in strange multi-event races, runs with us at a good solid pace. Ran a very very fast 5k race recently, but is yet to provide proof via GPS that it wasn't short.
Amanda Walker: wins training run intervals, and races frequently on the track. One who is rapidly finding form.
Bronwyn Calver: doesn't know the meaning of a rest hour, let alone a rest day. Plays every sport invented and some not yet invented. Was my pencilled-in favourite for the Wild Goose Chase but didn't win. This is because she didn't cheat. (And you can't get good help these days, see "Jodie")
Caroline Campbell: wins every triathlon in her age group. I must watch how she achieves this; I suspect she uses a rope to get a tow in the swim leg.
Cathy Montalto: happiest runner in the training group. Can run all day, although known to have stopped for lunch occasionally.
Charlie McCormack. One of our four world record holders. Doesn't get into Canberra to run with us as often as she would like. Could excel at marathons and the like next year.
Christine Gates: no one remembers who this is. Ditto for Jill Head, Jodie Sims, Kirsten Livermore, and Yili Zhu. and many others who joined us only briefly this year.
Christopher Lang: I am not sure if he is a 100m runner or a marathon runner, runs faster in training than in races.
Colin Farlow: having a training break, will come back happier, healthier, and fitter in a season or two when he decides to. A great talent.
David Baussmann: known to prefer squash to running. Someone, please tell him running is easier.
Ewen Thompson: his many fans believe his goals are serious. He will be telling them he is trying for the six foot track record/800m ACT record on the same weekend next year. They will believe him.
Gary Bowen: Coming into form, and only needs to discover the meaning of “an easy day” to be flogging the rest of us, now that he is wearing spikes and learning to run on his toes.
Geoff Barker: very good mountain runner who comes down to earth to train with us occasionally
Helen Larmour: coming right back to form, excels over long distances. One of our four world record holders.
Jodie Davis: "not competitive" "not a long distance runner" and not a slacker, seeing that she finishes every training session, and finishes strongly.
Joel Pearson: young, fit and happy (see "Yelena").
Kathy Sims: brilliant runner and brilliant under pressure. Holds ACT records and knows how to peak for the big occasion. Trains smartly, not flat out every time. Will improve again in the new year.
Katie Forestier: looking in top form and improving, will be “nipping at my Achilles heel*” before long in middle distance races. One of our four world record holders.
Kelley Flood: exceptional talent, could take any race by storm (get it? Flood-Storm?) but who we haven't seen at training for a while (see "Mick Horan"). I would love to see her run track. One of our four world record holders.
Ken White: training well and looks like he is coming back "on the boil" any day now.
Margaret McSpadden: consistent runner who gives Ruth a run for her money (see below)
Maria O’Reilly: seriously talented runner who has been seriously injured. Still running, and managing to inspire and motivate the rest of us, something she does so very well.
Mick Charlton: another consistent and regular runner who wouldn't surprise me if he won a handicap race in the new year.
Mick Horan: Potentially the fastest member of the training group who recently looks a bit tired for some reason (see "Kelley"). Will do well nationally next year after getting back into consistent racing.
Miranda Rawlinson: Biggest improver in the group this year, and self-confessed "sneaky" Wild Goose Chaser. Will keep improving with speed training.
Neil Boden: Consistent trainer. One day a week. Could improve a lot if he retired from work and took up running!
Rachelle Ellis-Brownlee: will learn to race hard one day, and knock 30 seconds off her 800m time and 60 seconds off her 1500m time. I predict she will be the biggest improver in 2009.
Rod Lynch: can run hard only about once a week but has enormous natural talent. We are all jealous. He hasn't hit top form for a while, but if he does, will be among the relay record breakers on the track.
Ruth Baussmann: consistent runner who gives Margaret a run for her money (see above)
Sonia Veldhoven: too fast for us, ran away to Melbourne before debuting on the track. We have missed a treat.
Thea Zimpel: still learning how to train, but by the time she qualifies to join the ACT Masters, will have done enough consistent training to excel in the W30s.
Tim Calver: known for his coffee and for running out of sight in training. Will do well on the road next year.
Tony Booth: excels on the track and set ACT records this year. Looking stronger and could do really well in 2009.
Yelena Pearson: one of the year's very big improvers in training and on the track, is young, fit and happy (see "Joel").

*this should fill the bill as yet another mixed metaphor.
