See Where We Went 16 May 2014 - Chelsea

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 with
Over the next week or so I am going to post the remainder of our "See Where We Went" UK and Ireland trip in 2014.
Those from 25 May 2014 and on were all posted earlier: See the label! http://geoffmoore.blogspot.com.au/search/label/See%20Where%20We%20Went
All that are left to put up are from the first third of our trip - everything we did before boarding a ship in Portsmouth.
So here we go.
On the 16th we flew into Heathrow and took the tube to South Kensington, walking across to our Chelsea hotel.
Leaving our luggage there - it was very early in the day - we walked down to the Thames, bought some lunch, then hopped on a bus to St Pauls and back, just to see the sights.
My phone battery died so the last four photos here are Jenny's.
Otherwise every photo after this will be mine. A small selection.

Something is happening in Adelaide

Posted by speedygeoff on Saturday, September 26, 2015 with
And people have been asking what and when.
I have entered five events in the Australian Masters Games and I am not sure I will run all five.

(Adelaide time)
~12:20pm Saturday 3 October 800m. I haven't prepared for this but I might run it to get a feel for the track and to see if my track shoes are still OK.

~10:45am Sunday 4 October 1500m. I may or may not run this. Three options I guess: Start and race flat out; start and run at 5000m pace; don't start. Or option 4, miss it altogether if I forget to put my clocks forward one hour. The M60s and M65s run together. So I might have considerable opposition given that only two age groups will be there.

~2:00pm Monday 5 October 5000m. This is the one I have been training for. Look at the start time; let's hope Adelaide weather is kind. There's one combined race for M60 and over. Big field, but maybe not many M65s. I will be busting a gut regardless.

8:00am Thursday 8 October 8000m Cross Country. I may not be suited by the course if it's heavy going which it was last time, but it's quite flat. I will be going flat out if I have survived the track events.

800am Saturday 10 October Half Marathon. This could be my best event. I will pace it watching my opposition.

Cross Country course. Four laps!

Half Marathon course. Four laps!

Four years ago in Adelaide I ran in three events: gold in the Half Marathon, silver in the 5000m, and bronze in the cross country. And that was in the M60s.

Two years ago in Geelong in the M65s I ran the same three events and won gold in the 5000m, gold in the Half Marathon, and silver in the cross country.

The goal this time is to win at least one medal of any colour!

this week's speedygeese training

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 with
Thursday at Kaleen, Turon Place was closed, so parking was at the tennis courts at Birie Place. Dan, Ruth and I ran 8.5k early, then we were joined by Dave and Susan, and we ran 5 x 850m, with a 250m recovery jog in between each. The lights at Kaleen weren’t on but we could see OK and it meant that there were no footy players on the numerous ovals.

Probably when the lights are on and the footy players are there, the gate will be open and we can park on Turon. Also, the Birie place car-park may be pretty well full then.

Sunday at Stromlo Forest Park I joined Thommo, Dave and Andrew for multiple laps.

Monday at Parliament House Dan and I ran early. We were joined by Andrew, Christopher, Dave, Isaac, Jen, Lorena, Pieta, Ruth, Susan & Warrick for Rose Garden 200s, 12 of them.

Dave's Memory Run Report

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, September 20, 2015 with
About 100 people in the 8Km "memory run". A lot more did the walk.
Got 2nd place overall (26:40) but we ran 6.5km, not 8 so we might have taken a short cut. No map of the course, no cones or arrows and the "marshalls" just sat there looking like they couldn't remember why they were there, even the one where I think we took the wrong turn.
I probably would have won it if I'd known we only had 500m to go instead of 2km as I expected. The kid I was running with took off in the last 500m.
No numbers handed out or timing so they wouldn't know my name even it it counted.
The good news was we averaged 4.05 pace. 18km altogether so all up a good day of running.

Also I ran another Ginninderra PB (22:03), and Bronwyn ran a Tuggeranong PB (22:25), we are both rapidly coming back to form.

draft Vets track program

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, September 17, 2015 with
Vets track starts in a month's time. Two out of every three weeks are at the new Woden track. I am thinking of attending most weeks at both venues. I haven't yet finalised my training pattern from October and on, but that is my current thinking. Regardless, Vets track is a good opportunity for anyone thirty years of age and over to include one short sharp running race into their program, which can only benefit people getting or staying fit. And the standard is not high, not at all, anyone can participate without feeling they are outclassed.

The program is draft but close to final. The first half of the season is reproduced below. Click to enlarge.

It would be great to see more people using these races to develop their speed and fitness. And of course there are also throwing, jumping, and walking events to try as well for those so inclined.

I am keen to see good fields for the relays. I have decided that I will help organise M65 teams this season for all relays ranging from 4 x 100m to 4 x 1500m. If possible I will participate in the 4 x 800m and 4 x 1500m myself. How about those of you in other age categories doing the same? If you would like to do this, I can provide contact details for those in your age category.

latest speedygeese training sessions

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 with
Thursday at Dickson: Julia, Marie and I ran early. And Colin, Susan and Dave ran at 5:30pm, an 800m and 2 x 3 x 200m, a repeat of the previous week.
No more runs at Dickson, we will be at Kaleen for the next couple of weeks.

Sunday at Stromlo Forest Park: Dave, Andrew, Thommo and I ran around the cross country track. I also ran part of it with Katie. And there was a Duathlon being set up, we said hello to Bronwyn, Ewen, David B and Ruth.

Monday at Parliament House: Dan, Ewen and I ran early. The main session was a repeat of last week, 6 x 200m followed by an option of hills sprints (6) or burpees (85). Participating were Christopher, Colin, Ewen, Julia, Pieta, Vanessa & Warrick. Afterwards eight of us enjoyed dinner at the Yacht club – Christopher, Ewen, Jenny and I, Pieta, Ruth, Vanessa & Warrick.

Tall tail tale

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, September 13, 2015 with
On Saturday 5th I ran my 24th parkrun, a Ginninderra PB of 22:17. It was also my first Ginninderra parkrun for ~15 months.

Then on Saturday 12th I ran my 25th parkrun, this time at Tuggeranong, and took 40 seconds off my Tuggeranong PB set in August, and cracked 80% age grading for the first time.
There was a familiar tail runner - Hodge (accompanied by Bronwyn)

I am thinking of repeating those runs on the next two Saturdays to see if I can knock some more time off. And potentially, an M65 record beckons. Stand by.

This spring weather is just great.

What rhyhmes with spaghetti?

Posted by speedygeoff on Saturday, September 12, 2015 with
You might race the many animals across the Serengeti
You might run through any jungle, clearing paths with a machete,
You might speed along the aisle and avoid all the confetti
Or go trekking in Nepal and overtake a trundling yeti.
You could join the speedygeese and try to match Marie Fischetti
When we start from Parly House and turn around at Yarra Jetty,
Every effort of this kind will make you thirsty hot and sweaty
So persist with constant training and keep eating your spaghetti.
And in time you may succeed and be as quick as Moneghetti.
I swear I did not type this on an ageing Olivetti.

...and here's the lovely Marie herself...

Changes to speedygeese training venues as we transition from winter to summer

Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, September 11, 2015 with
Mondays at Parliament House:
This will continue every Monday as usual.
Monday 14th: we will eat at the Yacht Club after training
Monday 21st: training as usual
Monday 28th: Training as usual but I shall be away
Monday 5 Oct: Training as usual; I am still away
Monday 12 Oct: Training as usual; I am still away
Monday 19 Oct: Training as usual; I'm back!

Thursdays:
Dickson Oval is expected to be unavailable, so
Thursday 17th: Training at Kaleen
Thursday 24th: Training at Kaleen
After that if people want to meet at Kaleen or elsewhere it's fine by me.

Thursday 15 Oct: Vets track begins, I plan to be there. I am open to alternative suggestions.

Kaleen:
Parking is at the end of Turon Place, off Diamantina, as indicated by the red circle in the map below.
The ovals are well lit and used by a number of sporting teams for training.
There is plenty of room for us to train around the perimeter of the ovals.
The timetable is:
4:30pm: I shall go on a longer run from Kaleen; all welcome to join me.
5:30pm: we commence a warm-up jog around the ovals
6:00pm: we begin an interval training session
6:30pm: intervals are finished and we complete a short cool-down.
The plan is to run long intervals at this venue.
If we turn up and there are no lights, we have the option of reconvening at UC, not far away.

Eb minor, 5/4 time and more

Posted by speedygeoff on Monday, September 07, 2015 with
Song of the weekAnimals”, by Muse, from “The 2nd law
At https://youtu.be/tFG_5PBl2K8

It is ironic that there would be a competition for a video of a song about industries desperate to "kill the competition". Anyway I am more interested in the rhythms therein. An article reads in part "'Animals' is a unique composition in Muse's discography, being the band's first full song to use a 5/4 time signature, and marking their first use of polymeters as a band, (previously used in Hoodoo with a string section): during the outro, the drums play in 4/4 while the other instruments remain in 5/4. It's also the first Muse song written in the key of E♭ minor. The progression in the chorus is similar to Screenager. The bridge that leads into the guitar solo bears a resemblance to the outro of Unnatural Selection. Throughout the guitar solo, the band plays 3 bars of 5/4; the 4th bar being 6/4. Throughout this solo, the crash is hit in 5/2 time for two bars, and then 11/4 for the next two bars in a similar fashion."

Thursday at Dickson: Jen, Julia, Marie and I ran 7k early. Then our track session was {2x2mins(2)+2x1(1)}x2(5) and enjoyed by Colin, Dave, Julia, Julia McD, Maria, Marie, Roger, Susan, Thea and Tori. There were fast runners from another group flashing by as well.

Monday at Parliament House on a pleasant evening reminiscent of spring, Dan, Miranda and I ran 8k early; Cathy, Christopher, Colin, Ruth, Susan and Warrick participated in the 5:30pm session where we ran six Rose Garden 200s on 2:30, and did 85 burpees.

Not every speedygoose runs as their main sport. Here's young Dom: I bet he could complete 85 burpees with ease.
